Open Season for Game in Acclimatisation Districts—North Island

This notice applies only to the open season for game in those acclimatisation districts which fall within the North Island.

PURSUANT to the Wildlife Act 1953, the Minister of Internal Affairs declares an open season for game in the acclimatisation districts and subject to the conditions specified in the Second Schedule hereto, excepting the closed game areas published in the supplement to the New Zealand Gazette of 18 February 1975, and subject to any amendments in any subsequent Gazette notice and in this notice.

The attention of sportsmen and others is drawn to the daily game possession limits set forth in the First Schedule hereto and to the provisions of the Wildlife Act 1953, and the Wildlife Regulations 1955.

FIRST SCHEDULE
DAILY GAME POSSESSION LIMIT

EXCEPT where all game is labelled with the following details:
(a) The name and address of the person by whom the game was taken;
(b) The number of the licence to hunt or kill game held by the person by whom the game was taken;
(c) The name of the acclimatisation society by which that licence was issued; and
(d) The date on which the game was taken.

No person shall have in his possession on any one day game in excess of the following numbers:

Saturday, 5 May 1979: A number of game corresponding to the number specified in this notification as the daily bag limit.

Sunday, 6 May 1979: Twice the number of game specified for Saturday, 5 May 1979.

Every subsequent day: As for Saturday, 5 May 1979.

AUCKLAND ACCLIMATISATION DISTRICT

Game That May be Hunted or Killed
Duration of 1979 Season

Grey, shoveler (or spoon-bill), and mallard duck (except that no duck may be hunted or killed on Great Barrier Island) .... 5 May to 17 June 1979 incl.
Paradise duck (only in the counties of Otorohanga, Waitomo, Taupo, and Taumarunui) .... 5 May to 17 June 1979 incl.
Pukeko .... 5 May to 29 July 1979 incl.
Black swan (except that no swan may be hunted or killed on the Waikato hydro lakes, Karapiro, Arapuni, and Waipapa) .... 5 May to 17 June 1979 incl.
California and brown quail and cock pheasant .... 5 May to 29 July 1979 incl.

Daily Bag Limits

Grey duck, 15.
Shoveler (or spoonbill), 15.
Mallard duck, 15.
Paradise duck, 3.
Grey, shoveler (or spoon-bill), mallard, and paradise duck, 15 in all.

Shooting hours: 6.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m.
Decoy limit: No limit.

Special Conditions

  1. No person shall use or cause to be used for the hunting or killing of game on Lake Waikare any fixed stand, pontoon, hide, maimai, or loo, except within 180 metres of the outer margin of the said lake, or the shoreline of that island known as Motu Nui or Grape Island.

  2. No person shall use or cause to be used for the hunting or killing of game on Lake Ngaroto any fixed stand, pontoon, hide, maimai, or loo, except within 85 metres of the margin of the said lake.

  3. No person shall use or cause to be used for the hunting or killing of game on Lake Rotokauri any fixed stand, pontoon, hide, maimai, or loo, on any open water of the said lake.

  4. It shall be an offence for any person to wilfully leave any black swans shot or the mutilated bodies of any black swans shot in the Auckland Acclimatisation District.

  5. It shall be an offence for any person to drive black swans for the purpose of hunting or killing them in the Auckland Acclimatisation District.

  6. It shall be an offence to shoot game from drifting or hand-propelled boats on the Waikato River north of the boat ramp at the confluence of the Mangawara Stream and the Waikato River at Taupiri on any of the first 3 days or the second weekend of the open season.
