No. 81

BEFORE THE INDECENT PUBLICATIONS TRIBUNAL

Messrs L. M. Greig (Chairman), D. M. Wylie, L. Edmond, Mrs H. B. Dick.

Hearing: 25 May 1978 at Wellington.

Appearances: Written submissions from the applicant.

DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL

This book is objectionable in its crude language and content. It has been written in a manner in which the repetitive passages of explicit descriptions of sexual behaviour become repellent and tiresome, and because it is openly accepted in other countries, gives it no reason for acceptance here. This book has already been termed indecent by the Tribunal in a previous decision; and there appears to be no reason for change.

The Tribunal therefore classifies this book as indecent.

Dated at Wellington this 30th day of August 1978.

LAURENCE M. GREIG, Chairman.

Decision No. 901

Reference No. IND-15/77

Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the matter of an application by Bruce Albert Armstrong, of Hamilton, for a decision in respect of the following publication: The Joys of Oral Love, published by Brolga Books Pty. Ltd.

BEFORE THE INDECENT PUBLICATIONS TRIBUNAL

Messrs L. M. Greig (Chairman), D. M. Wylie, Mrs L. Edmond, Mrs H. B. Dick.

Hearing: 25 May 1978 at Wellington.

Appearances: No appearance of applicant. Written submissions considered.

DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL

At first sight this book may appear to be a seriously intended sex manual on the techniques used in forms of love making involving oral contact. Its text consists of three parts—an historical survey of literature and art, the transcript of a group discussion on the subject involving 12 people, and a final section on ways and means. While this text on its own might merit a restricted classification, between a third and a half of the book consists of full-page, very detailed and intimate illustrations which bear no relation to the adjacent text. In many cases by their frankness they seem designed to appeal to prurient tastes. The emphasis given to them calls into question the honesty of purpose of the whole publication, and the Tribunal finds it to be indecent.

Dated at Wellington this 7th day of September 1978.

LAURENCE M. GREIG, Chairman.

Decision No. 903

Reference No. IND-7/78

Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

In the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the matter of an application by Collins Publishers for a decision in respect of the following publication: More Joy of Sex, published by Rigby Ltd., Adelaide.

BEFORE THE INDECENT PUBLICATIONS TRIBUNAL

Messrs L. M. Greig (Chairman), D. M. Wylie, Mrs H. B. Dick, Miss W. M. Rolleston.

Hearing: 10 August 1978.

Appearances: No appearance.

DECISION

In decision 852, the Tribunal declared the hard-back version of this book, to be indecent in the hands of persons under 16 years. Because the material in this version is exactly the same as that considered in the earlier decision, the Tribunal sees no reason to change its view of the book.

The Tribunal classifies this book as indecent in the hands of persons under 16 years.

Dated at Wellington this 7th day of September 1978.

LAURENCE M. GREIG, Chairman.
