Standard Grade for the Export of Potatoes Notice 1978

PURSUANT to regulation 13 of the New Zealand Grown Fruit and Vegetables Regulations 1975, the Director-General of Agriculture and Fisheries hereby gives notice that the standard grade for the export of potatoes shall be as set out in this notice.
NOTICE
-
Short title and commencement—(1) This notice may be cited as the Standard Grade for the Export of Potatoes Notice 1978.
(2) This notice shall come into force on the day after the date of its notification in the New Zealand Gazette. -
Application of notice—(1) This notice determines the standard grade applicable for the export of tubers grown from cultivars of the potato plant (Solanum tuberosum) and, subject to subclause (2) of this clause, shall be the minimum grade standard for potatoes exported from New Zealand to be supplied in their natural state to consumers.
(2) The sizing requirements as set out in 6 shall not apply to potatoes exported from New Zealand to those countries listed in the First Schedule to this notice. -
Interpretation—(1) Unless the context otherwise requires, terms used in this notice shall have the same meaning as in the New Zealand Grown Fruit and Vegetable Regulations 1975*.

Grade Mark—The grade mark assigned to this standard grade shall be Class I (hereinafter referred to as "the grade").

Quality Requirements—(a) The potatoes must be—
(i) Intact, whole tubers;
(ii) Sound;
(iii) Clean;
(iv) Well formed;
(v) Free from abnormal external moisture;
(vi) Free from foreign smell or taste.
(b) The tubers must be free from greening, storage defects, or any other defects which impair their general appearance or keeping quality.
(c) The tubers must be free from pests, diseases, and contamination with toxic materials.
(d) Skin defects which are not liable to impair the keeping qualities are permitted on each tuber within the limits specified in the Third Schedule to this notice. -
Size of Export Potatoes—(1) Subject to the tolerance contained in the Third Schedule to this notice, and to subclause (2) of this clause, the minimum size of potatoes for export shall be—
(a) 50 mm; or
(b) the smallest tuber which does not pass through a square, the sides of which are 51 mm in length.
