GENERAL PUBLICATIONS
KILN SCHEDULES FOR NEW ZEALAND TIMBERS
By J. A. Kininmonth and D. H. Williams
New Zealand Forest Service Information Series No. 69
This 16-page booklet outlines the selection of suitable kiln
schedules. The interrelationships of the variables involved
in drying timber are set out, along with the requirements
to be taken into consideration, such as grade, thickness, width,
and end use of a particular species. Both low- and high-
temperature drying are discussed and also special kiln treat-
ments such as preliminary steaming, intermediate high-humidity
treatment, equalising, and final conditioning.
Price 35c
BY AUTHORITY: A. R. SHEARER, GOVERNMENT PRINTER, WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND—1975
No. 79
The kiln schedules are presented in tabular form giving
wet and dry bulb temperatures and final conditioning times
for various species and moisture contents. Comments are
attached to these schedules regarding characteristic features
of the kilning of the species and the expected range of drying
times.
16 pages. 1974.
Price 50c.
MACHINE STRESS GRADING
(An alternative to visual grading of timber for strength)
By I. D. WHITEside
This book outlines the need for commercial machine stress
grading in New Zealand.
Stress grading studies carried out by the writer in 1967
on radiata pine from Kaingaroa Forest showed that machine
stress grading gave better grade recoveries over visual grad-
ing hence raised the value of a considerable proportion of
the sawn output in framing sizes.
The writer firmly believes that the introduction of machine
grading will help overcome the present lack of stress grades
in New Zealand. This lack of availability is thought to have
been a major cause of timber not being much more widely
used as a structural material in competition with concrete
and steel.
An informative book for builders, building inspectors, and
specifiers to prepare them for the introduction of machine
stress graded timber.
