No. 849
Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal
In the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and
in the matter of an application by MacMillan Publications Ltd.
for a decision in respect of the following publication Snatches
& Lays by Sebastian Hogbotel and Simon Ffuckles, and
published by Sun Books Pty Ltd. of Melbourne, Australia:
Date of Hearing: 16 October 1975, at Wellington.
No appearance of the applicant.
Mr P. E. Leloir and Mr K. G. Murray appeared on behalf
of the Comptroller of Customs.
DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL
This is a collection of songs, verses, and limericks, edited
and published in Australia. Many of the items are well
known in one form or another, as students' or football songs,
which have had an oral currency for many decades.
The essence of all such verses is that it should be spoken
or sung as the editors note “rowdily, rhythmically and con
multo gusto”. There is no question of any literary or other
merit or importance in this collection.
Many of the items are indecent and there is no redeeming
feature in the collection as a whole which would render
it acceptable.
The Tribunal classifies this book as indecent.
MAURICE M. GREIG, Chairman.
