Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal
IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and
in the matter of an application by Waverley Publishing Co.
Ltd. for a decision in respect of the book Erotic Art by
Drs Phyllis and Eberhard Kronhausen, published in West
Germany.
Mr Campbell appeared on behalf of the applicant and
made submissions.
DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL
This is a slight but quite elegantly produced collection of
erotic art both medieval and modern. The text is in German
and we were provided by the New Zealand agents for the
publishers with an English translation. The text is propagandist
but unobjectionable.
We do not think that this is a publication which is likely
to corrupt or deprave mature readers. At the same time,
some of the works illustrated depict practices which younger
people might be misled into accepting as normal acceptable
social behaviour. Also, taken out of context and displayed,
some of the illustrations would be obscene.
The book looked at as a whole is comparable with works
considered by the Tribunal in decisions 77 and 584. An
age restriction is appropriate.
The Tribunal classifies this book as indecent in the hands
of persons under the age of 18 years.
R. V. S. SIMPSON, Chairman.
