Weather Summary and Bankruptcy Notices

27 JANUARY THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE 193

Sunshine—Over most of the North Island and in Nelson and Marlborough, and Western Southland sunshine was 20–80 hours below normal, with highest deficiencies in Bay of Plenty and Taupo.

Weather Sequence—During the first 3 days of December a depression from the North Tasman Sea moved on to the North Island bringing rain there, with some considerable falls in Hawke’s Bay on the 3rd. Only scattered showers were reported over the South Island. For the next 2 days the depression moved eastward past East Cape, while an anticyclone covered the Tasman Sea and most of New Zealand. Rain was reported mainly in Bay of Plenty and Gisborne. From the 6th to the 8th a trough of low pressure associated with a depression to the south moved north-eastward over the country accompanied by a period of light rain. On the 9th an anticyclone covered most of the country but with the depression to the north-east rain was reported in Bay of Plenty and Gisborne and showers in Northland and Auckland.

From the 10th to the 18th an anticyclone, initially centred over the eastern Tasman Sea, crossed New Zealand and remained for several days to the east of the Chatham Islands. This was a period of mainly fine weather. The exceptions were, rain in Fiordland on the 12th, rain with north-easterlies in Northland on the 15th and 16th, and rain in Fiordland and South Westland on the 17th and 18th.

From the 19th to the 21st a trough of low pressure associated with a small depression near Campbell Island moved north-eastward over the country with a period of rain in many places. However, little or no rain was recorded in eastern districts from the Canterbury Plains to the Wairarapa. By the 22nd and 23rd an anticyclone brought settled weather to most of the country. However, rain persisted in the easterlies in some northern districts of the North Island, besides Gisborne. On the following day the weather was generally fine.

From the 25th to the 27th a trough of low pressure moved northward over the country accompanied by rain. During the next 2 days another trough of low pressure became stationary over Otago and Southland while a depression which had been a tropical cyclone moved into the North Tasman Sea. Considerable rain was reported in South Westland, Fiordland, and Southland, and some rain in Otago. During the last 2 days of the year the depression over the North Tasman Sea moved closer to the North Island, at the same time losing intensity. Rain was general except in eastern districts.
