The “normal” refers to the present site of the instruments. The standard periods for normals are: for temperature 1931–60, for rainfall 1921–50, and for sunshine, 1935–60. No normals are available for stations with only short records.

*The sunshine recorder is not located at the station but is in the near vicinity.

NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR DECEMBER 1971

General—December was a warm month, and dry in the South Island. It was a good month for stock, and there was plenty of growth except in parts of Marlborough and Canterbury, where it was too dry. As in most previous months of 1971, there was an unusually high frequency of north-easterly winds.

Rainfall—In the South Island rainfall was below normal, except in Western Southland. In Marlborough, Canterbury, and parts of Central Otago it was from a tenth to a half of the normal value.

In the North Island rainfall was mainly within 50 percent of the normal value. However, in parts of Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, and Northern Hawke’s Bay it was more than 50 percent above; while in Wellington it was more than 50 percent below normal.

Very little rain was recorded anywhere in the country from the 10th to the 18th, and most places had none during this period.

Temperatures—Temperatures were above normal, mainly by 1–1½°C.
