Indecent Publications Tribunal Decisions

2 DECEMBER

standing in the field of popular writing about sex, and we
concede that there is a place for information of this kind,
popularly presented for persons unlikely to approach other
sources. This book is written for the average man and woman
rather than for the "advanced lover", and in many cases the
advice and information it contains could be very helpful.

The Tribunal classifies this book as not indecent.

R. S. V. SIMPSON, Chairman.

No. 377
Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

In the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the
matter of an application by the Comptroller of Customs for a
decision in respect of the book Lesbian Secrets by Evelyn
Theodor, published by Luxor Press Ltd., London.

There was no appearance of the applicant. Mr Downey,
solicitor, appeared on behalf of the publishers and made
submissions.

DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL

THE Tribunal was invited by Mr Downey to consider this book
as comparable to another on the same subject from the same
publisher which was allowed restricted circulation in decision
No. 125. The Tribunal said of that earlier book "The subject is
treated in a scholarly and objective fashion (attested by careful
chapter notes, bibliographies, and index) calculated rather to
increase understanding than to pander to prurience".

Lesbian Secrets, however, lacks entirely a scholarly apparatus
and the dominant effect of the book is like that of several other
books which the Tribunal has rejected as pseudo-scientific
assemblages of case-history and fictional experiences. The text,
the use made of illustrations, and the cover material all indicate
that a prurient response and not an honest inquiring one is
sought from readers.

The Tribunal classifies this book as indecent.

No. 378
Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

In the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the
matter of an application by the Secretary for Justice for a
decision in respect of the book Sex Manners for Men by
Robert Chartham, PH.D., published by New English Library,
London.

There was no appearance of the applicant nor of the
publisher's representative in New Zealand. Accordingly no
submissions were made.

DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL

THIS is a plain, even prosaic, presentation of sexual information
and technique. The "uniqueness" claimed for it on the cover is
more a matter of its particular emphasis as part of a series of
sex guides than of any special merit or insight. It cannot be
said to deal with sex in a manner injurious to the public good.

The Tribunal classifies this book as not indecent.

No. 379
Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

In the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the
matter of an application by the Secretary for Justice for a
decision in respect of the book Sex Manners for Single Girls
by Dr Georges Valensin, published by New English Library,
London.

There was no appearance of the applicant nor of the
publisher's representative in New Zealand. Accordingly no
submissions were made.

DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL

ONE copy only of this paperback was supplied to the Tribunal
and accordingly the decision has been delayed.

The book written by Dr Georges Valensin who is described
on the cover as an eminent French sexologist gives advice on
the sexual problems of today's unmarried woman. The book
is frank and explicit and Dr Valensin does endeavour to give
a balanced statement and advice on the difficulties likely to be
encountered by single girls, as is instanced by the chapters on
the advantages and disadvantages of premarital relations.

In the opinion of the Tribunal the book is not indecent but
because of the frankness of the writing it feels that it should
not be readily available to young people.

The Tribunal classifies it as indecent in the hands of persons
under the age of 16 years.

No. 380
Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

In the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the
matter of an application by the Secretary for Justice for a
decision in respect of the book The Scandal Goddess by William
Hegner, published by Dell Publishing Co. Inc., New York.

There was no appearance of the applicant nor of the
publisher's representative in New Zealand. Accordingly no
submissions were made.

DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL

The Scandal Goddess is a satirical projection of a well-known
and vicious type of character assassin who operates through
syndicated gossip columns and sometimes on the air or the
television screen as well. It is formula moving-picture material,
and a note on the not very restrained cover claims that it is
"soon to be a major movie".

This is by no means an unskillful example of its type, credibly
taking the principal character through stages of anaesthetising
of conscience and first disciplined and then unbridled attacks
on victims and rivals, and finally disaster. Stripped of
adventitious but quite extensive and obscene passages The
Scandal Goddess will probably make a major movie, though
an unkind one, for some of the victims are prominent and
recognisable people. But the extent of the depravity and off-
beat sex motivation of the principal character, Adrienne Drum,
remove the story from the realm of reasonable fiction. There
is so massive an injection of unusual sex activity and it is so
little necessary to the presentation of the character concerned
that we find that the book offends against section 11 (1) (f) of
the Act, and that there can be no question of its being
redeemed under section 11 (2).

The Tribunal classifies this book as indecent.

No. 381
Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

In the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the
matter of an application by the Comptroller of Customs for a
decision in respect of the book Wham by Mike Stout, pub-
lished by Sphere Books Ltd., London.

There was no appearance of the applicant nor of the
publisher's representative in New Zealand. Accordingly no
submissions were made.

DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL

The title of this book is derived from the name of a women's
liberation movement called We Hate All Males, a militant
movement-militant to the extent of throwing all males out of
Parliament and taking over the Government of the U.K.
with its leader, Lydia, a female Hitler surrounded by female
storm troopers and secret police women. The story is a
satire, in places amusing, on this new form of women's activity.
The treatment of lesbianism and violence is necessary for the
main satirical purpose of this book and the emphasis on these
is not of sufficient significance to move the Tribunal to class
the book as indecent.

The Tribunal classifies this book as not indecent.
