Climatological Table and Reserve Bank Statement

26 AUGUST

Sunshine—The North Island, excluding Northland, eastern districts, and parts of Wellington, was favoured with 40–65 hours sunshine above normal. Parts of the West Coast and Otago were similarly favoured. Relatively high sunshine was recorded at Ohakune (148 hours) and Levin (164 hours). The only areas with sunshine below normal, by 15–40 hours, were parts of Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa besides Banks Peninsula.

Weather Sequence—At the beginning of the month an anticyclone was centred to the south-east of the Chatham Islands while a depression lay to the west of Northland and winds were from the north-east. Rain was reported mainly in northern and eastern districts of the North Island. As this depression advanced on to Northland on the 2nd it developed a second centre to the south-west of the first. Gales were reported in northern districts with heavy rain there, and the rain became general over the North Island, extending also to parts of Nelson and Marlborough. On the following day the first centre lay to the east and a trough of low pressure was approaching Southland. Rain again affected northern and eastern districts of the North Island and also the West Coast. As the trough advanced over the country rain again became fairly general on the 4th. With pressures low to the east, showery southerly conditions affected mainly the North Island on the following day. On the 6th the depression near the Chatham Islands deepened, and freshening southerlies brought colder weather, also affecting eastern districts of the South Island. On the 7th an anticyclone centred to the east of Campbell Island extended on to the South Island and showers were restricted mainly to the Wairarapa, Wellington, parts of Canterbury, and Northland.

The period from the 8th to the 17th was one with a marked predominance of cold southerly winds. The anticyclone to the east of Campbell Island remained almost stationary from the 8th to the 10th, while a depression moved on to Northland with another centre to the east of it. Rain affected Northland while showers were reported from East Cape to Christchurch. For the next 3 days, with pressures low near Northland, showers persisted in the same districts. However, a trough of low pressure crossed the South Island and showers were also reported on the West Coast, besides Southland and Otago. By the 14th the depression was well away to the east and the trough of low pressure was now over the North Island while an intense anticyclone moved on to the South Island. Rain continued in Northland and eastern districts of both Islands, besides South Taranaki, Wellington, and Southland. Snow was reported in parts of Otago and Canterbury. Southerlies persisted for 3 more days as the anticyclone remained almost stationary, with showers affecting eastern districts of the North Island and Wellington, besides Northland at times.

From the 18th to the 20th the anticyclone was centred near the Chatham Islands while a depression covered the Tasman Sea. Showers still persisted in eastern districts as far south as Timaru and also in Northland. Conditions remained somewhat similar during the next 2 days. However, on the 23rd and 24th the anticyclone, still centred near the Chatham Islands, extended over the whole country and the weather was fine. The anticyclone still remained almost stationary, while on the 25th and 26th a depression over the Tasman Sea deepened and became complex, with one centre close to Northland. Rain spread over the North Island, Marlborough, and Nelson, with some heavy falls in Northland and Bay of Plenty. Northland also reported violent gales with considerable damage. Gusts up to 100 mph were recorded at Cape Reinga.

The winds changed to westerlies from the 27th to the 30th as a deep depression from the Tasman Sea moved past Southland followed by another smaller centre. During these 4 days considerable rain was reported west of the main ranges and also in Southland and Nelson. On the last day of the month a ridge of high pressure brought generally fine weather.
