The “normal” refers to the present site of the instruments. The standard periods for normals are: for temperature 1931–60, for rainfall 1921–50, and for sunshine 1935–60. No normals are available for stations with only short records.

*The sunshine recorder is not located at the station but is in the near vicinity.

NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR JULY 1971

General—Pressures were unusually high to the south of the country in July, with a higher mean pressure at Campbell Island than at Kaitaia. This resulted in an exceptionally high frequency of winds from an easterly quarter, as in previous months back to November, with considerable cloud and rain in some eastern districts but mainly low rainfall and fairly sunny conditions elsewhere. In eastern districts of the North Island and in Northland some farmers found the weather too wet for stock. Elsewhere unusually frosty weather cut back growth but stock were healthy. Lambing commenced under favourable conditions in most districts.

Depressions over Northland caused severe gales there on the 2nd and 26th, and these were reported also in other northern districts on the 2nd.

Rainfall—Rainfall was below normal over the greater part of the country by about 30 percent. In parts of Southland it was less than a quarter of the normal value. It was above normal in eastern districts from East Cape to Ashburton, in most of Coromandel with parts of Bay of Plenty, and in northern Northland. An area on the East Coast around Tokomaru Bay had a surplus of more than 50 percent.

Temperatures—Temperatures were mainly close to normal. However, in some coastal areas of Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay they were 1°C warmer than normal. This was the first month since September 1970 for which temperatures over the country were not well above normal. Snow affected many parts of the South Island on the 14th.
