NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR MARCH 1971
General—March was the fifth successive month with an unusually high frequency of winds from an easterly quarter over the North Island. In Canterbury and in southern districts of the North Island the weather was too dry, causing a shortage of feed in some areas and also affecting crops. Good rains during the second half of the month in Southland relieved the dry conditions which had developed there.
Rainfall—Rainfall was only about half the normal value over the greater part of the country, and it was less than a quarter in the North Canterbury high country.
Persistently low rainfall has been recorded on the West Coast for the last 5 months, the total of 25.39 in. at Hokitika from November to March being the lowest in over a century of observations. In Canterbury and in the Alps rainfall has been unusually low for 3 months; Lincoln’s total of 2.61 in. being the lowest since 1939, and the Hermitage’s 12.92 in. the lowest since 1947.
Rainfall was above normal in three main areas: the South Island from Haast and Timaru southward; eastern Northland with Coromandel and most of Auckland; and parts of Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay. Along the east coast of Northland, around Warkworth, and in Coromandel a large proportion of the rain fell on the 10th and 11th in easterlies, with a depression centred near North Cape. Totals of up to 10½ in. were reported for the 2 days, with considerable flooding.
Temperatures—Temperatures were 2°F. (1°C.) above normal in the South Island and close to normal in the North Island.
Sunshine—Most of the country was favoured with more sunshine than normal, and departures of 50–80 hours were recorded in western districts. On the West Coast it was the sunniest March for 30–50 years.
Weather Sequence—For the first 14 days easterly weather predominated over the North Island, with considerable rain in parts of Northland and on the East Coast.
At the beginning of the month an anticyclone covered New Zealand but pressures were low to the north and some rain was reported in eastern Northland and in the East Coast ranges. As the anticyclone moved eastward, a trough of low pressure moved towards Northland and a small depression formed east of the
South Island. On the 2nd and 3rd some light rain was reported on the Southland coast and in western districts from Taranaki southward. During the next 3 days an anticyclone over the Tasman Sea was spreading slowly on to New Zealand but pressures remained low to the east. The weather was fine except for rain in most eastern North Island districts. From the 7th to the 9th the anticyclone extended across New Zealand and the weather was fine.
By the 10th the centres of high pressure were situated over the South Tasman Sea and to the south-east of Southland; and on this and the following day a depression south-east of Norfolk Island moved on to Northland. Heavy rain was reported in Northland and Coromandel with flooding, and rain soon extended to most other parts of the North Island. On the 12th a depression remained almost stationary off eastern Northland and further rain persisted about the same areas, with light falls also in some east coast districts of the South Island. For the next 2 days, as the depression moved rapidly away to the east, light rain still affected most eastern districts of the North Island.
From the 15th to the 17th pressures were high over the North Island and low far to the south-west. A trough of low pressure moved north-eastward over New Zealand bringing rain to western districts as far north as Waikato, besides Otago and Southland. On the following day a similar trough affected only the West Coast, Southland, and parts of Otago.
From the 19th to the 23rd pressures were high over New Zealand, and the weather was fine except for some rain in eastern Northland on the 21st with the passage of a depression near there. During the 24th and 25th a trough of low pressure moved on to the South Island from the south-west and a small depression developed there with considerable rain in western and southern districts of that Island. During the next 2 days the trough advanced further with another trough behind it, causing a southerly change. Rain spread over most of the country, but the falls were mainly light and there was very little in the east of the North Island.
From the 28th to the 30th an anticyclone covered the Tasman Sea with the ridge of high pressure extending eastwards on to New Zealand, and the weather was mainly fine.
On the last day of the month a trough moved northward over the country bringing light rain to the South Island, with a few scattered falls also in the North Island.
