Tariff and Development Board Notice No. 220—Public Inquiry Into Import Duties and Import Licensing Affecting Excavators (Ex. Tariff Item 84.23.04)

  1. At the public inquiry into the question of import duties and import licensing affecting excavators, which was notified in Tariff and Development Board Notice No. 180 in the New Zealand Gazette, of 3 September 1970, only one New Zealand manufacturer gave evidence. The Board has since been informed that other New Zealand manufacturers who wish their views on this question to be considered by the Board did not participate in the public inquiry because of misunderstanding.

  2. The Board has decided, therefore, that in this case it will, for the purpose of taking additional evidence, reopen the public inquiry in the Boardroom, First Floor, Law Society Building, 26 Waring Taylor Street, Wellington, on Monday, 12 July 1971, commencing at 10.30 a.m.

  3. Any person who intends to tender evidence should lodge 12 copies of a typewritten statement of the evidence, to be presented under oath at the public inquiry, at the Board’s office no later than Monday, 28 June 1971. In preparing this evidence the “Notes for Guidance of Witnesses” prepared by the Board may be of assistance. Copies of these notes may be obtained from the Board’s office.

Dated at Wellington this 20th day of April 1971.
O. A. BLACK,
Secretary, Tariff and Development Board.

No. 282

Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the matter of an application by the Comptroller of Customs in respect of the book She Liked Them Young by Rick Nathan. Published by Softcover Library, New York. Paperback 75c (U.S.).

There was no appearance on behalf of the Comptroller of Customs, nor of the publisher’s representative in New Zealand. Accordingly no submissions were made to the Tribunal.

DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL

THIS is a story of a married woman pursuing young lovers with considerable success. The book, which is poorly written, consists of tedious accounts of her sexual adventures with her lovers. The content and manner of writing are cheap and for these reasons we determine the book could well be harmful to the attitudes of young persons.

The Tribunal classifies the book as indecent in the hands of readers under the age of 18 years.

R. S. V. SIMPSON, Chairman.
6 April 1971.

No. 283

Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the matter of an application by the Comptroller of Customs in respect of the book The Magic Garden of Stanley Sweetheart by Robert Westbrok. Published by New English Library, London. Paperback price $1.15.

There was no appearance of the applicant nor of the publisher’s representative in New Zealand. Accordingly no submissions were made to the Tribunal.

DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL

THIS novel is a not unskilful impression of the corruption and disintegration of character which a lack of objective can develop in the young dropout. The loneliness of each character, even in group situations, is ably conveyed to the reader, and although there is a great deal of explicit sex activity this is not in its intent an immoral book.
