Description: Three-pin flat-pin type plug constructed from moulded thermo-setting material in conjunction with a rubber grommet and a circular terminal cover of resin bonded sheet attached by the use of three screws. The moulded portion is marked—

2. The possible electrical hazard arises from the omission of provisions to prevent the internal connections making dangerous contact in the event of a broken or loose conductor or screw, and also from the omission of adequate cord anchorage for the flexible cord to relieve strain, including twisting, on the conductors where they are connected to the terminals.

Both these conditions have been the cause of fatal electrical accidents in New Zealand.

3. The plugs fail to comply with the electrical safety requirements of New Zealand Standard Specification 198:1967 —3-pin flat-pin plugs, plug-sockets, tapons, and cord extension sockets with 10 amp, 250 volt (maximum) rating, in respect of the following clauses of the specification—

Clause 1—Scope (current rating)
Clause 5—Dimension of pins
Clause 9—Internal connections
Clause 11—Identification of pins
Clause 15—Cord anchorage

Compliance with the electrical safety requirements of NZSS 198 is a statutory requirement for this type of plug.

4. These plugs are likely to be connected to the flexible cord of sewing machines and other appliances manufactured in Japan.

5. All persons who have purchased appliances fitted with the above-mentioned plugs should arrange for the plugs to be immediately replaced with ones of a safe type complying with NZSS 198:1967, and destroy the unsafe ones.

6. Every person who sells or offers for sale any apparatus which, in the opinion of the General Manager, New Zealand Electricity Department, constitutes or may constitute an electrical hazard commits an offence and shall be liable to a fine not exceeding $200.
