Decisions of the Indecent Publications Tribunal
No. 184-187
IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in
the matter of an application to the Tribunal for decisions in
respect of the following books, all published by Lancer Books
Incorporated, New York—
The Secret Diary of Ho Chi Minh’s Daughter.
Bestseller.
Mistress of Bayou Labelle.
My Secret Life with Older Women.
DECISIONS OF THE TRIBUNAL
THESE books have been considered by the Tribunal upon the
application of the Comptroller of Customs. In respect of each
book the Tribunal decides as follows:
The Secret Diary of Ho Chi Minh’s Daughter, by Lanh Ba.
This paper-back book, the true authorship of which is
described as a literary mystery, purports to tell the story of a
young Vietnamese girl who, after seduction by a priest, becomes
a prostitute in Saigon. Finally, by blackmail, she induces a U.S.
serviceman to marry her and take her to New York. After her
marriage has broken up she resumes her former way of life.
The emphasis throughout is on sex, perversion, and homo-
sexual practices and the narrative is so presented as to be
calculated to excite prurient interest. The title is misleading, for
the basis of the young woman’s relationship with Ho Chi Minh
is clearly a fabrication.
The Tribunal is of the opinion that the book is indecent
within the meaning of the Act, and classifies it accordingly.
Bestseller, by Toni Freedman.
This paper-back book is described on its suggestive cover as
“The electrifying, sensational novel of a genuine, 24 carat, all-
American bitch”.
It certainly measures up to this description in its detailed
account of the sexual adventures of a young lady who wrote
a best seller. The emphasis is on sex, presented in a false and
debased light. Drug-taking and various perversions are added
for good measure, to complete a sordid picture which is quite
meretricious and could very well be harmful.
We classify it as indecent.
Mistress of Bayou Labelle, by Lou Cameron.
This paper-back tells the story of a New Orleans prostitute
who, by deceit and murder, gains title to a plantation. It is
highly coloured, but not entirely without merit, set as it is
against a background which provides a picture of plantation
life at the time. The author has, however, thought fit to include
descriptions of sexual torture and other features which we
consider are presented in a manner calculated to exploit
prurient interest. It offends against almost every provision of
the Act which we are obliged to take into account.
We classify it as indecent.
My Secret Life with Older Women, by James Blaine.
This paper-back tells of the sexual adventures of a young
“spiv” in the field of gerontophilia. It portrays in crude terms
how this hero, by his sexual progress with older and thwarted
women, extracts from them extensive wealth. It ends with a
gloating description of a shockingly violent murder in the
midst of a sexual orgy. Its whole tone is antisocial.
It is clearly indecent and we classify it as such.
F. McCARTHY, Deputy Chairman.

Decisions of the Indecent Publications Tribunal
No. 188 and 189
IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in
the matter of an application by the Comptroller of Customs
for decisions in respect of—

  1. Sons of the Sun, the authors being A. Baege, Hannelore
Mehner, Reinhard Thomas, and Klaus Uhse; published by
    Book Horizons, Harrow, Middlesex, England.
  2. Sons of Sun and Health. The authors are Spencer Martin-
dale and Doris Milward. Published by Sun and Health
    Ltd., Harrow, Middlesex, England.
    DECISIONS OF THE TRIBUNAL
Both these books were imported by the Waverley Publishing
Co. Ltd. with the consent of the Comptroller, so that they
could be submitted to the Tribunal for classification.
The first book is a colour photo album of nude males. Apart
from two possible exceptions, there is nothing harmfully
suggestive in the work. We classify it as not indecent.
The second book differs from the first only in that the photo-
graphs of nude males are accompanied by some text, dealing
with the history of nudism and the approach over the years to
the unclad human form. The text is well written, factual, and
quite dispassionate. We classify this book as not indecent.
    F. McCARTHY, Deputy Chairman.
    24 November 1969.
Decisions of the Indecent Publications Tribunal
    No. 179-183
IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in
the matter of an application by Murdock Riley, of Wellington,
company director, as agent for the publishers, for decisions in
    respect of the following books—
    A Courtesan’s Caresses.
    Coupled.
    Sexualis '69.
    Between Two Women.
My Bed is Not for Sleeping.
    DECISIONS OF THE TRIBUNAL
THE application is made by leave of the Acting Minister of
Justice. Mr Downey appeared in support of the application.
In respect of each book the Tribunal decides as follows:
    A Courtesan’s Caresses; a paper-back book, written by Anne
Zorine and published by Brandon House, of California..
The price of the book in New Zealand is $2.20. Despite a
    psychological and semi-philosophical introduction, entitled
