An Honourable Estate-Lane Kauffmann. Mayflower Books Ltd., London.

This is a very long and quite competent modern American novel. It is possible that the picture on the jacket could mislead an intending purchaser into expecting a higher erotic content than the book in fact possesses. Although it deals with love, divorce, an abortion, and an illicit love affair, and although one character is described as a homosexual, the text is not notably concerned with matters of sex but is primarily a study in human relationships. The Tribunal accordingly classifies the book as not indecent.

The Immoral Tradition-Fernando Henriques. Panther Books Ltd., London.

This is the paperback issue of the second volume of the study of “Prostitution and Society” by Professor Henriques who is Professorial Fellow and Director of the Research Unit for the study of Multi-Racial Societies at the University of Sussex. He traces the history of prostitution from early Christian to modern times, concentrating finally on the United States and its special problems, particularly among negroes. The subject is a legitimate one; the author's treatment of it is widely comparative and historical and he throws a good deal of light on social, institutional, and legal changes. Two sections of photographs and many illustrations in the text are genuinely illustrative. It is impossible to say that Professor Henriques treats his subject otherwise than as a student of history and sociology should, and even on such a subject serious work of this quality cannot be considered likely to corrupt. We therefore decide that this book is not indecent.
