botanical research in New Zealand and such fund shall consist
of moneys subscribed as at 22 May 1957, and such moneys
as shall subsequently be added to the fund.
-
The Council shall have control of the moneys in the
fund and may invest the same upon any securities proper for
trust-moneys. It may accept for inclusion in the fund any
moneys hereinafter subscribed by way of gift, bequest, or
through any other channel. -
The fund shall be used for the purposes of grants in aid
of addresses to be delivered or for publications relating to
botanical research carried out by New Zealand workers. -
The Council at its first meeting after the Annual General
Meeting each year shall determine the time, place, and alloca-
tion of moneys for such addresses or publications as may be
decided. -
There shall be published in each volume of the Proceed-
ings a complete list of the speakers and of the authors of
publications who have received grants from the Cockayne
Memorial Fund.
JVII. The E. R. Cooper Memorial Fund:
-
The fund placed in the hands of the Council of the
Society by the Technical Advisory Committee of the Dominion
Physical Laboratory shall be called “The E. R. Cooper
Memorial Fund” in memory of the late Edmund Roy Cooper.
Such fund shall consist of moneys subscribed and granted
for the purpose of the memorial and all other funds which
may be given or granted for the same purpose. -
The fund shall be vested in the Society. The Council shall
have the control thereof and shall invest the same in any
securities proper for trust-moneys. -
The memorial shall be an award to be known as “The
E. R. Cooper Memorial Award” the object of which shall be
the encouragement of scientific research in New Zealand in
the fields of physics or engineering. The award shall be in
two parts:
(a) A bronze medal of approved design suitably inscribed;
(b) A book or books selected by the winner of the award,
and of value decided from time to time by the
Council and suitably inscribed.

The annual costs shall be met only from interest accruing
from moneys invested in the said fund. -
The Council shall appoint a Selection Committee to
recommend to the Council the person to whom an award shall
be made. The Selection Committee shall consist of five
members as follows:
(a) One member of the professional staff of the Department
of Scientific and Industrial Research;
(b) Two members of the teaching staff of the Physics
Department of the Universities of Auckland and
Wellington, or Christchurch and Dunedin, for
alternate awards;
(c) Two representatives of the Society, one at least of whom
shall be a professional engineer.

The award shall be made every two years but the Council
shall have the right to withhold an award in any year should
it consider the contributions of insufficient merit. -
The award shall be made to the person or persons who
in the opinion of the Selection Committee have published
the best single piece of original research work carried out by
them in New Zealand in physics or engineering. Preference
shall be given to contributions to the development of the
natural resources of New Zealand, treated in the widest sense.
Contributions published within the four years preceding 31
December of the year preceding the year of an award shall
be considered. Applicants who submit a paper under joint
authorship must indicate what percentage of the work and
what ideas expressed are their own. -
Applications or nominations for the award shall be in
writing, and must reach the General Secretary of the Society
not later than 1 March of the year of an award, but the
Council may waive this condition if it deems fit. Such applica-
tions or nominations shall be supported by two copies of the
publication to be submitted for consideration by the Selection
Committee. -
The Council shall not amend the conditions of the award
without having first obtained the approval of the Director
General of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research
and the Director of the Physics and Engineering Laboratory,
Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. -
Wherever possible the award shall be presented in some
public manner. -
There shall be published in each volume of the Proceed-
ings a complete list of recipients of the E. R. Cooper Memorial
Award.
JVIII. The Benson Fund:
-
Under the terms of his will the late Emeritus Professor
William Noel Benson, B.A., D.SC., F.R.S., F.R.S.N.Z., F.G.S.,
F.R.G.S., a former President of the Society, who died on 20
August 1957, left one-tenth of the residue of his estate to the
Society “to supplement funds available for the publication of
scientific papers”. -
The Benson Fund shall consist of moneys received under
the will of the late Professor W. N. Benson and other funds
which may be given or granted for the same purpose. -
The fund shall be vested in the Society. The Council
shall have control thereof and shall invest the same in any
securities proper for trust moneys. -
The revenue from the fund shall be applied by resolution
of the Council to the payment, in part or in whole, of the cost
of preparing or printing geological maps, or other scientific
illustrations accompanying papers accepted for publication in
the Transactions of the Society. -
Each geological map or other scientific illustration,
published entirely or in part through the support of the fund,
shall bear the endorsement “Published with the support of
the Benson Fund of the Royal Society of New Zealand”. -
The Council at any meeting may resolve that any part of
the unexpended revenue from the fund shall be added to the
capital thereof.
SECTION K—THE PRESIDENT’S FUND
K1. The President’s Fund, established in 1964 by Dr C. A.
Fleming, shall consist of a capital sum, the revenue derived
from which shall be made available to the President to support
the duties and responsibilities of his office.
K2. The fund shall be vested in the Society. The Council
shall have the control thereof and shall invest the fund in
such investments as it may in its absolute discretion think fit;
and it may vary and transpose such investments from time to
time without being in any such case in any way liable for
any loss that may result therefrom.
K3. The net annual revenue of the fund, calculated during
the Society’s financial year ending 31 March after deduction
of administrative expenses, together with any unexpended
revenue from previous years, shall be paid by the General
Secretary in whole or in instalments on the request in writing
of the President who is in office during the following year.
K4. Revenue from the fund may be used by the President
at his sole discretion to support in whole or in part any one
or more of the following activities undertaken in his capacity
as President, or for any other activities that he deems necessary
or desirable for the performance of his office, and for the
furtherance of the charitable objects of the Society:
(a) For hospitality or entertainment;
(b) For travelling expenses for himself or for his deputy
both in New Zealand and overseas to deliver
addresses, attend scientific meetings, conferences,
formal celebrations, or meetings for presentation of
the Society’s awards;
(c) For stationery, postage, circulars, invitations, business
cards, secretarial services;
(d) For the support of any unbudgeted activities of the
Society that will in his judgment further the promo-
tion of science in New Zealand.
K5. Payments under the above rules shall require no resolu-
tion of the Council and the receipt or endorsement of the
President shall be sufficient discharge to the Council for each
such payment.
K6. The terms of these rules, and the disposal of both
capital and revenue in the President’s fund may be varied
by resolution of the Council at any meeting by the unanimous
vote of all councillors present at that meeting after notice
of motion duly given.
SECTION L—FELLOWS
The original Fellows numbered 20 and included in the
first place those Past Presidents, and Hutton and Hector
Medallists who held their distinctions and positions prior to
3 February 1919, and who at that date were members of the
New Zealand Institute. The remaining original Fellows were
nominated as provided for in the Rules then in force, and
elected by the said Past Presidents and Hector and Hutton
Medallists.
L1. The Fellowship of the Society shall be an honour
conferred for distinction in research and the advancement of
science.
L2. The total number of Fellows at any time shall not be
more than 100.
L3. The official abbreviation of the title “Fellow of the
Royal Society of New Zealand” shall be F.R.S.N.Z.
L4. Not more than six Fellows shall be elected in one year.
The number who may be elected in any year in terms of this
rule shall be decided by the Fellows at the previous Annual
General Meeting, but the Fellows shall not thereby be com-
pelled to elect that number.
L5. No person shall be nominated or elected as a Fellow
unless he has been resident in the Dominion of New Zealand
for at least three years preceding his nomination. In giving
his consent to nomination under Rule L6 each nominee shall
express his willingness to comply with the conditions of
Fellowship. Nothing herein contained shall render women
ineligible for nomination or election.
L6. Nominations may be made by member bodies or by
groups of Fellows. Nominations by Fellows must be signed
by not less than three Fellows. Each of the member bodies
may nominate as many persons as it thinks fit. Each nomina-
tion must be accompanied by a statement limited to about
one foolscap sheet of typewritten matter of the qualifications
of the candidate for Fellowship. When a candidate is nominated
by more than one member body or group of Fellows it shall
be sufficient to utilise the information supplied by one member
body or group of Fellows. Where a candidate was also
nominated in the previous year the statement utilised with
that nomination may again be used. The consent of the
candidate must be obtained in writing when he is first
