There shall be published in each volume of the Proceedings, a complete list of awards of the Hutton Memorial Medal, and also a list of all grants made from the fund during the previous year.

The Council may from time to time amend or alter the above rules, such amendments or alterations being in all cases in conformity with Rules JI 5 to 7.
JII. Hector Memorial Research Fund—Rules under which the Hector Memorial Medal and Prize shall be awarded.

The fund originally vested in the New Zealand Institute by Declaration of Trust on 31 July 1914 (Published in the Proceedings 89 (2):109–110) and now vested in the Society shall be called “The Hector Memorial Research Fund” in memory of the late Sir James Hector, K.C.M.G., F.R.S. The object of such fund shall be the encouragement of scientific research in New Zealand, and such fund shall consist of the moneys subscribed and granted for the purpose of the memorial, and all other moneys which may be given or granted for the same purpose.

The fund shall be vested in the Society. The Council shall have the control of the said moneys, and may invest the same upon any securities proper for trust-moneys.

It shall be a first charge upon the fund to procure each year a bronze medal to be known as “The Hector Memorial Medal”.

The fund, or such part thereof as shall not be used as aforesaid, shall be invested in such securities as may be approved by the Council, and the interest arising from such investment, after the payment of all expenses legally incurred by the Council in the investment and administration of the said fund, shall be used for the furtherance of the objects of the fund by providing thereout a prize for the encouragement of such scientific research in New Zealand of such amount as the Council shall from time to time determine.

The Hector Memorial Medal and Prize shall be awarded annually, provided that in the opinion of the Council there is evidence of scientific work of great merit.

The medal and prize shall be awarded in rotation for the following subjects, namely: (a) Botany; (b) Chemistry; (c) Ethnology; (d) Geology; (e) Physics (including mathematics and astronomy); (f) Zoology (including animal physiology).

In each year the medal and prize shall be awarded to that investigator who, working within the Dominion of New Zealand, shall in the opinion of the Council have done most towards the advancement of that branch of science to which the medal and prize are in such year allotted.

Whenever possible the medal shall be presented in some public manner.

JIII. Hamilton Memorial Fund—Rules under which the Hamilton Memorial Fund shall be administered.

The fund placed in the hands of the Council by the Wellington Philosophical Society shall be called the “Hamilton Memorial Fund” in memory of the late Augustus Hamilton. Such fund shall consist of moneys subscribed and granted for the purpose of the memorial and all other funds which may be given or granted for the same purpose.

The fund shall be vested in the Society. The Council shall have the control thereof and shall invest the same in any securities proper for trust-moneys.

The memorial shall be a prize to be called “The Hamilton Memorial Prize”, the object of which shall be the encouragement of beginners in pure scientific research in New Zealand.

The Hamilton Memorial Prize shall be awarded at intervals of not more than three years by the Council but in no case shall an award be made unless, in the opinion of the Council, there is evidence of scientific work of great merit.

The prize shall be awarded for original pure scientific research carried out in New Zealand or in the Islands of the South Pacific Ocean which has been published within five years preceding the last day of January prior to the Council meeting at which the award is made. Such publication may consist of one or more papers, and shall include the first investigation published by the author. No candidate shall be eligible for the prize who prior to such period of five years has published the results of any scientific investigation in a recognised scientific journal. A notice or advertisement of the award shall be distributed to member bodies and other appropriate organisations in October of each year.

The prize shall consist of money. The interest from the principal shall be applied wholly or in part in payment of the prize, and the Council shall determine by resolution the amount of the prize and whether part or all of the balance of the interest shall be added to the principal, in each case after the payment of expenses incurred in the investment and administration of the said fund, and award of the said prize.

At the first meeting after the Annual General Meeting the Council shall appoint a Hamilton Award Committee to recommend the award of the Prize for the coming year; the committee shall consider candidates for the prize in the following categories:
(a) Candidates for the prize who send to the General Secretary, on or before 31 December preceding the Council meeting at which an award is to be considered, an intimation of his or her candidature, together with at least two copies of each publication on which the application is based.
(b) Candidates nominated by Fellows or members of the Society who shall send such nominations to the General Secretary on or before 31 December preceding the Council meeting at which an award is to be considered, and shall send at least two copies of each publication on which the nomination is based.
(c) Candidates nominated and recommended by the Hamilton Award Committee, even if they have not applied under Rule JIII 7 (a) and have not been nominated under Rule JIII 7 (b), provided that they are eligible under Rule JIII 5.

JIV. The T. K. Sidey Summer-time Fund—Rules under which the T. K. Sidey Medal and Prize shall be awarded.

The fund originally vesting in the New Zealand Institute by Declaration of Trust on 14 November 1932 (Published in the Proceedings 89 (2): 112–115) and now vested in the Society shall be called “The T. K. Sidey Summer-time Fund”.

The Council shall give not less than six months’ previous public notice in not less than four of the principal newspapers circulating in New Zealand of its intention to consider the making of any award from the Fund and the date by which applications for the award are to be received. Copies of the notice shall be distributed to societies and institutions, the names of which appear on a list approved by the Council.

Such notice shall specify the qualifications of applicants as determined pursuant to clause 4 of the aforementioned Declaration of Trust, and also the subject matter of the research either as set out in clause 1 (vi) of the said Declaration of Trust, or as extended under the proviso to the said clause 1 (vi), or as limited under clause 7 of the said Declaration of Trust, according to any determination thereon of the Council.

Applicants for the award may submit either theses specially prepared for the award or copies of published works not specially so prepared, or both as the applicant may think fit.

The Council and its assessors will not be limited to consideration of theses so submitted, but may take into account any knowledge that they may have of the research of any applicant or person nominated.

A nomination of a person to receive the award will be received from any member of the Council or Fellow of the Society, but no award shall be finally declared in favour of any person until after his concurrence in the proposed award has been received by the Society.

There shall be published in each volume of the Proceedings a complete list of awards of the T. K. Sidey Summer-time Memorial Medal and prize.

If no award be made on any given occasion, a general notice shall immediately be distributed in the same manner as in Rule JIV 2. This notice shall indicate the purposes of the award, the subject-matter of the research, the qualifications required of applicants, and the probable date of the next award. The date of such award shall be considered within a period not exceeding two years of such notice.
JV. The Mappin Trust—The Mappin Trust, originally called the Plant Diseases Trust and later the Plant Research Trust, was established by the gift of Sir Frank Crossley Mappin, in 1942.

Grants from the Trust shall be made by the Council or by the Standing Committee at any of its regular meetings.

Except under special circumstances grants shall be made only from the income derived from the Trust Fund.

Member bodies in some appropriate way at the beginning of each year shall draw the notice of their members to this Fund.

Applications for grants from this Fund shall be made in writing to the General Secretary of the Society. Applications must state clearly the purposes for which the grant will be used, the amount required, together with the qualifications of the applicant to undertake the research proposed.

Grants shall be available to members of the Society, who possess the necessary qualifications, for the purpose of undertaking research in the field, or at research institutions in New Zealand, or overseas, on problems connected with the pathology, systematics, physiology, ecology, distribution, or genetics of New Zealand plants and plant pathogens.

The Council shall, if it deems necessary or advisable, consult the Director of Plant Diseases Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in determining whether to make a grant to any candidate or not.

All recipients of grants from the Mappin Trust Fund shall, on the completion of the research, forward to the General Secretary of the Society, a report giving the results achieved and the details of expenditure incurred.
JVI. The Leonard Cockayne Memorial Fund—The purpose of this fund is to commemorate Dr Leonard Cockayne, C.M.G., F.R.S., F.L.S., F.R.S.N.Z., who between 1881 and 1935 did much original research in the field of New Zealand botany, and whose writings between 1898 and his death covered comprehensively such a wide scope as to place him in the forefront both of New Zealand and of world botanists.
