NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR MAY 1963

General: The weather during May was fairly typical of the late autumn, apart from dry conditions in eastern districts. In the Auckland and Hawke’s Bay Provinces and in Wairarapa it was the second month of low rainfall and in some areas feed was short; in Wairarapa lack of fresh water was still affecting the health of stock. In the South Island and western districts of the North Island stock were reported to be in satisfactory condition, and in many areas there was still some pasture growth.

Small local tornadoes caused some damage in southern suburbs of Auckland on the 29th.

Rainfall: Rainfall was only half the average value in most eastern districts and two-thirds in Northland. In parts of Central and Northern Hawke’s Bay totals were below half an inch and at some stations rainfall was the lowest on record for May.

The West Coast and most of the Nelson Province received 50 per cent more rain than normal.

Temperatures: Temperatures were close to average in the North Island and above average by a degree in the South Island.

Snow was reported in the Southland high country and the North Island ranges on the 5th; it was also reported in parts of the South Island high country on the 27th.

Sunshine: Sunshine was mainly close to or slightly above average. However, Nelson and Blenheim were each favoured with surpluses of 27 hours; while Invercargill received 15 hours below the normal value.

Weather Sequence: During the first three days of the month a depression crossed the South Island and the associated complex trough of low pressure moved over the whole country with general rain, heavier in the west of both islands.

The period from the 4th to the 14th was one of westerly to south westerly winds, with pressures high over the Tasman Sea and the North Island and low to the south and south-east. The weather was frequently unsettled in Southland and on the West Coast; and more general showers affected many districts on the 5th, with snow on the Southland high country and the North Island ranges. More general showers were reported again on the 12th, and in some North Island districts showers persisted on the two following days.

A belt of high pressure across the country brought mainly fine weather on the 15th. However, during the next two days a vigorous trough crossed New Zealand with rain on the West Coast at first, later spreading to many other districts. The greater part of Marlborough and the Auckland Province were not affected.

From the 18th to the 22nd an anticyclone moved slowly from the South Tasman across the country, with settled conditions.

A complex depression developed over the Tasman Sea, and on the 23rd the weather deteriorated in Fiordland and Southland and also in Northland. During the next two days the depression crossed the country and rain became general over the North Island, being heavy in the Bay of Plenty. In the South Island the rain was lighter and parts of Canterbury received little or none. Another trough soon followed, with general rain on the 26th and 27th, except in Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay.

For the last four days of the month north-westerly to westerly winds predominated, with a very deep depression at first almost stationary off the south-western tip of Southland. Rain affected the greater part of the country; but in eastern districts from northern Hawke’s Bay to Invercargill the weather was mainly fair.
