✨ Maori Land Declarations and Weather Report
21 SEPTEMBER
Flooding was reported from about the 7th, during the southerly
storm, in Wanganui, Manawatu, and Wairarapa. Many stations
in these areas received 5–7 in. of rain over the period 4th to 9th;
Orongorongo, in the ranges between Wellington and southern
Wairarapa, received nearly 19 in.
Temperatures: For most of the country temperatures were below
normal by about a degree. However, on the West Coast it was
warmer than usual by a degree; and in Canterbury, Nelson, and
Taranaki temperatures were about average.
Most of the snow reported in the South Island high country
fell at about the same time or earlier than that over the central
North Island, that is, from about the 1st to the 8th.
Sunshine: Sunshine showed extreme variations. It was above
average over the greater part of the country, mainly by about
20 hours. For the West Coast it was the sunniest August on record,
and Hokitika’s 210 hours was nearly double Napier’s total of
111 hours.
Eastern districts from Gisborne to Wairarapa received 30–70
hours less sunshine than average. Sunshine was also somewhat
below normal in Manawatu, about Wellington city, and in coastal
Otago.
Weather Sequence: On the 1st a depression was moving off the
North Island to the east, with some rain over the greater part of
the Island. However, during the next two days a cold front crossed
the South Island, with rain spreading over it from the west and south.
On the 4th an active depression formed on the cold front over
Taranaki. As this depression crossed the country and moved slowly
away to the east, deepening at first, an unusually severe and
persistent southerly storm affected the southern half of the North
Island until about the 10th. Gale force winds disrupted telephone
communications and air transport. In the central North Island,
road and rail transport were brought almost to a standstill by
heavy snow and slips. Flooding was reported in Manawatu and
Wairarapa. There was widespread heavy rain on the 4th, and
heavy falls were also reported on 5th and 6th, mainly throughout
southern Hawke’s Bay and Wellington. Further heavy falls occurred
in Hawke’s Bay on the 9th. Fine weather predominated after the
4th in Nelson, West Coast, and from Taupo to Bay of Plenty.
By contrast, the period from the 11th to the 21st was one of
settled weather in many districts. For the first five days an anti-
cyclone covered the Tasman Sea, with a ridge of high pressure
extending on to New Zealand. During this period a depression was
passing to the north, and easterly winds brought showers or rain
at times to eastern districts from Cape Palliser to East Cape;
showers were also reported on the Southland coast. From the
16th to the 18th a weak trough crossed the country, with light
rain in some districts, mainly near the coast. From the 19th to the
21st an anticyclone was centred to the east, while depressions were
situated over the north Tasman Sea and to the north of Northland.
In the north-easterlies showery weather persisted in Northland
and Gisborne and at times extended to parts of Auckland and
Bay of Plenty.
From the 22nd to the 24th the depression which had been over
the north Tasman Sea moved south-eastward to cross Southland.
Rain spread over most of the country; however, Wairarapa and
inland areas of the South Island were not affected. Some considerable
falls were reported in Bay of Plenty and Northland on the 24th.
During the next three days an anticyclone was centred over the
South Island, while a complex depression passed close to North
Cape; rain was restricted mainly to eastern and northern districts
of the North Island. The weather improved in these districts during
the 28th and the 29th as the anticyclone spread over the whole
country, but showers persisted at first in Gisborne and Hawke’s
Bay. On the last two days of the month another complex depression
covered the north Tasman Sea and the North Island. Rain spread
southwards, extending as far as the Kaikoura coast and north
Canterbury.
