the heavy rain in Canterbury fell from the 11th to the 13th during easterly weather.

At Tauranga, during a thunderstorm on the 6th an exceptionally high rainfall of 3·75 in. was recorded in one hour.

Temperature: Temperatures were mainly close to average. However, the West Coast was 1–2 degrees warmer than normal, and North Otago and parts of Canterbury a degree colder.

Snow fell on the higher mountains of the North Island from the 23rd to the 25th.

Sunshine: Sunshine was below average except in the Auckland Province, about Cook Strait, and in Otago and Southland. Largest deficiencies were observed in South Canterbury and North West-land; in South Canterbury it was one of the cloudiest Mays on record.

Northland, Auckland, and Waikato were favoured with sunnier weather than usual, totals being 20–30 hours above average.

Weather Sequence: For the first four days a belt of high pressure extended across the country, with mainly fair or fine weather. However, a depression near Raoul Island deepened and moved southward causing easterly rains in the Gisborne district and on the 2nd and 3rd also in Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa.

From the 5th to the 8th a deep depression moved from the north Tasman Sea across the Auckland Province. The whole of the North Island received some rain, and there were also light falls on the east coast of the South Island. The rain was particularly heavy in parts of Bay of Plenty and Wairarapa.

For the next nine days the weather was dominated by a depression which developed over the central Tasman Sea on the 9th. At first rain was mainly confined to those districts exposed to northerly winds. By the 11th the depression had deepened and was stationary west of the North Island. As pressures rose rapidly to the south of the country, freshening easterlies over the South

Island caused heavy rain on this and the following day in Canterbury and Marlborough. Rain also extended temporarily to most other districts except Otago and Southland. From the 13th to the 17th the depression first weakened and then crossed the Auckland Province, with unsettled weather continuing in the northern half of the North Island, about Cook Strait, and in eastern districts from Timaru to Castlepoint. The passage of a weak trough also caused some rain on the 16th and 17th in Southland and South Westland.

For the remaining fortnight pressures were high over the north Tasman Sea and low to the south and south-east of the country. Winds were mainly from a westerly quarter, and a series of troughs of low pressure passed over New Zealand. From the 18th to the 20th freshening westerlies in the south brought considerable rain to Fiordland and South Westland, and lighter falls in North Westland, Southland, and on the Otago coast. On the 21st a very deep depression passed to the south. The associated trough crossed the country, with rain spreading to eastern districts from Canterbury to Wairarapa and some light falls also over most of the remainder of the North Island. The weather improved on the 22nd under the influence of a weak ridge, but a few showers were still reported in Southland and about Cook Strait. Two more troughs which passed over in succession during the next four days were each accompanied by rain except in parts of Hawke’s Bay and Central Otago. From the 27th to the 30th yet another trough affected most districts, with rain spreading over the country slowly from the south and west. The weather cleared on the last day of the month under the influence of a weak ridge of high pressure, but a few showers were still reported, mainly in Southland, South Westland, and the Auckland Province.
