Weather Sequence: During the first two days of the month a complex depression passed to the south and westerlies prevailed, with rain in the west and south of the South Island and also in western districts of the North Island. The next two days brought a change to southerlies, with a few showers in most areas.

By the 5th an anticyclone was centred near the Chatham Islands, and a depression from the north Tasman Sea now moved on to the Auckland Province. This depression remained almost stationary for three days, with rain over the North Island and northern coastal districts of the South Island. Thunderstorms with flooding and heavy seas were reported around Whangarei. As the depression lost intensity on the 8th rain became scattered over the North Island. However, at the same time a cold front brought rain to the south-west of the South Island. For the next two days, as the depression moved away, south-westerlies prevailed, with showers on the coast in the southern half of the South Island. On the 11th and 12th a weak ridge of high pressure brought fair weather. A deterioration soon occurred again in most districts with the passage of a very deep depression to the south-west on the 13th and 14th. North-westerly gales were reported in Fiordland and Cook Strait. The main area which missed the rain extended from Wairarapa to East Cape.

A cold front which crossed the country during the next two days ushered in cooler temperatures, which were to persist for over a week. Light rain now spread to all eastern districts, but the weather cleared in the west of both islands. An anticyclone moved rapidly from the Tasman Sea to the east of the South Island and a depression soon developed near North Cape and moved slowly eastward from the 17th to the 20th. Initially it was the Coromandel district which suffered, with heavy rain and flooding. However, from the 18th to the 20th strong to gale force easterlies buffeted Gisborne and northern Hawke’s Bay, with exceptionally heavy and persistent rain in the ranges and about Lake Waikaremoana, and some snow to quite low levels. Flooding in the Mohaka River and other areas caused serious disruption of road transport. The South Island and most of the Wellington Province and South Taranaki received no rain, and conditions soon cleared in the Auckland Province except for the Gisborne district. From the 21st to the 24th an anticyclone was centred to the south-east, while the depression moved away to the east. Showery weather persisted in Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay, and a few showers were also reported in Central Otago on the 23rd and 24th.

During the next three days a depression passed to the south and the associated trough of low pressure brought light rain to most coastal districts of the South Island and also to western districts of the North Island and Northland. Thunderstorms affected parts of Southland and Otago. Somewhat similar conditions prevailed also for the last three days of the month. Two more weak troughs crossed the country, affecting mainly the South Island; but on the 30th some western districts of the North Island also received light rain.
