NOTE—At stations where departures from normal have an asterisk, the temperature record has been maintained for less than 10 years, the rainfall record for less than 20 years. Rainfall normals have been revised and now refer to the standard period 1921–50. Where observations are not available for the whole period, or where the site of the rain gauge has been changed, the normals are partly interpolated.
NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR NOVEMBER 1960
General: For the greater part of the country November was somewhat drier than usual. In many districts it was considered a good month for stock, but in a few areas conditions were rather too dry.
It was particularly wet and cloudy in Gisborne and northern Hawke’s Bay. In this area a large percentage of the month’s rain fell during the passage of a depression just to the north from the 18th to the 20th. The exceptionally heavy and persistent rain caused flooding and disruption of road transport. Serious losses of newly shorn sheep were reported, especially as temperatures were cold with snow to quite low levels on the ranges.
Rainfall: Over most of the country, outside Northland, Gisborne, and Hawke’s Bay, rainfall was about average or below it by up to 40 per cent. However, parts of Waitomo, Nelson, Marlborough, North Canterbury, and the Alps received less than half the normal rainfall; while most of Otago received more than 50 per cent above average.
By contrast, Gisborne and northern Hawke’s Bay and parts of central Northland were much wetter than usual. From Tokomaru Bay to the Mohaka River totals were from four to six times the average value and by far the highest on record for November.
At Mangatoto Station, between Wairoa and Gisborne, the total for the month was 22·34 in., of which 20·85 in. fell between the 16th and the 23rd; and 16½ in. of it fell on the 18th, 19th, and 20th.
Temperatures: Temperatures were mainly close to average.
The coolest spell was the third week, from about the 16th to the 23rd.
Sunshine: Sunshine was below average in eastern and southern districts of the North Island (including Rotorua and Bay of Plenty) and also in Otago. In Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay, and Wairarapa it was one of the cloudiest Novembers on record, with 60 hours less sun than normal.
Northern Northland, Taranaki, and the West Coast were favoured with 30 to 60 more hours sunshine than usual.
