THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE

Weather Sequence: During the first two days of the month a weak ridge of high pressure covered New Zealand, while a trough was moving away to the east. The weather was fair in most districts, but some showers were reported, especially in Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Otago, and Southland.

By the 3rd an anticyclone was centred east of Southland, but a depression which had developed over the north-east Tasman Sea was already bringing heavy rain to Northland. On the following day rain spread over most of the Auckland Province and also commenced on the West Coast. Flooding was reported in parts of Northland. Several complex centres of low pressure developed, and a trough preceded by strong northerly winds moved eastward across the country, with rain on the 5th spreading to all areas except the east and south of the South Island. The heaviest rain was now in Coromandel and Bay of Plenty, with some flooding. For the next two days the complex depression remained stationary over the eastern Tasman Sea, and northerly winds continued, with lighter rain persisting in the Auckland Province and on the West Coast.

From the 8th to the 10th the weather was mainly fair in many districts, under the influence of a ridge of high pressure. However, a weak trough brought rain to the West Coast on the 8th and 9th; and showers affected western districts of the North Island and some coastal districts of the South Island on the 9th, and Gisborne and Bay of Plenty on the 10th.

A very deep southern depression soon passed eastward close to Campbell Island. The passage of the associated trough of low pressure brought heavy rain to the West Coast and the Alps on the 11th and 12th. Some rain was also reported in most remaining districts of the South Island and in western districts of the North Island. During the next two days the development of a depression over the north-east Tasman Sea and its passage across the North Island caused the winds to turn to cold south-easterlies. The weather cleared on the West Coast, but elsewhere in the South Island rain became somewhat heavier, proving welcome after three weeks of rather dry conditions. Rain was also recorded over the whole of the North Island. Thunderstorms affected Canterbury and North Taranaki; while unusually heavy hail was reported in South Taranaki, Bay of Plenty, and Auckland city.

By contrast, the period from the 15th to the 27th was one of mainly settled weather. At first the depression was still moving away to the south-east and a few showers were reported near the coast in the North Island. From the 18th to the 21st pressures were high over the country, but the presence of a shallow depression over the north Tasman Sea caused rain at first over the West Coast, with showers later in Southland and in a few coastal districts. From the 22nd to the 26th (including Labour Day weekend) the weather was particularly settled under the influence of a slow-moving anticyclone. However, one or two isolated showers were still reported. On the 27th conditions deteriorated in the west and south of the South Island with the passage of a shallow depression close to Southland.

From the 28th to the 30th a trough and an associated shallow depression moved slowly eastward over the country, with general rain. The weather cleared in the west and south as the trough progressed over the North Island. A weak ridge brought an improvement in the weather on the last day of the month, except in the Auckland Province and some other coastal districts where showers persisted following a change to south-westerlies.
