from the Tasman Sea crossed the northern half of the South Island. As the depression moved away on the following day, the weather cleared in most eastern districts and also in inland districts of the South Island. During the 7th and 8th another very deep depression passed far to the south. There was further considerable rain on the West Coast and in the Alps, with lighter falls in Southland and Otago.
On the 9th another trough became retarded over the North Island, and a depression formed in the Tasman Sea. Rain again became more or less general, but the weather remained fair at first in Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, and northern Hawke’s Bay. The next five days was a period of particularly heavy rain over parts of the Auckland Province, culminating in serious flooding in the Hauraki Plains and some flooding also in Waikato and parts of Northland. From the 10th to the 12th the depression remained almost stationary to the north-west of Northland, while pressures were high over and to the east of the South Island. In the strong north-easterlies rain was confined mainly to the Auckland Province. However, during the next two days rain spread southward over most of the country with the passage of the depression over the North Island.
As the depression moved away to the east on the 15th and 16th winds turned to southerlies and south-westerlies, and conditions improved in many areas. On the following day an anticyclone brought a brief spell of fair weather, but another depression soon developed over the North Tasman Sea, and by the 18th it was raining again over the Auckland Province. Some light rain spread southward over most of the country on the 19th. However, when the depression crossed the North Island on the 20th an anticyclone brought a clearance to the South Island.
From the 21st to the 28th was a period of settled weather for many districts, due to the influence of an anticyclone which moved slowly from the Tasman Sea across the South Island and away to the east. However, the weather remained unsettled in Gisborne and Northland over most of this period, mainly owing to the presence of depressions to the north and north-east.
On the last two days of the month a depression from the Tasman Sea crossed the South Island, with rain over the North Island (except parts of Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay) and in northern and western districts of the South Island.
