NOTE--At stations where departures from normal have an asterisk, the temperature record has been maintained for less than 10 years, the rainfall record for less than 20 years. Rainfall normals have been revised and now refer to the standard period 1921-50. Where observations are not available for the whole period, or where the site of the rain gauge has been changed, the normals are partly interpolated.

NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR SEPTEMBER 1960

General: September was unusually cloudy, especially in the North Island. Persistent north-easterly winds brought exceptionally wet weather to the Auckland Province, adversely affecting the health of stock. Elsewhere it was considered to be a reasonably favourable month for stock and crops.

Rainfall: Rainfall was appreciably above average over most of the Auckland Province and also in parts of Taranaki, Hawke's Bay, Nelson, and inland South Canterbury. It was mainly two to four times normal in Northland, Auckland, Coromandel, and northern Waikato; and over a considerable part of this area it was the wettest September on record.

Elsewhere rainfall was close to normal, except in parts of Canterbury and Southland, which were drier than usual.

Following heavy rain from the 10th to the 14th, serious flooding occurred in the Hauraki Plains on the 15th, with some flooding also in parts of Waikato and Northland. At Waitekauri, near Waihi, the total rainfall for the month exceeded 34 in., of which 24 in. fell between the 10th and the 15th.

Temperatures: Temperatures were 2 degrees above average over most of the North Island from Wanganui and Napier northward and also in Nelson and on the West Coast. Elsewhere they were mainly close to average.

Snow was reported in the high country of both islands on the 10th.

Sunshine: In the North Island (except Manawatu and Wellington) and in Nelson totals were 40 to 90 hours below average, and for many districts it was the cloudiest September on record. Auckland, Waihi, Rotorua, and Taumarunui all received less than 100 hours.

Elsewhere sunshine was mainly deficient by about 30 hours. However, Invercargill was favoured with a surplus of 21 hours.

Weather Sequence: During the first four days several depressions passed south of New Zealand and winds from a westerly quarter prevailed. Considerable rain fell on the West Coast, and some rain was also reported in western districts of the North Island, about Cook Strait, and in the far south. Rain became general on the 5th, as a trough moving over the country was retarded and a depression
