across the South Island. However, parts of Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa received no rain. As the depression moved away to the east on the 15th winds turned to the south, with considerable thunderstorm activity in western districts from Buller northward. With rising pressures the weather cleared over most of the South Island and part of the Wellington Province. By the 16th only eastern areas of the North Island from Napier to Tauranga were reporting rain.

By contrast, the period from the 17th to the 22nd was one of predominantly settled weather. From the 17th to the 20th a large anticyclone extended over New Zealand from the south-east and the weather was fine apart from a few isolated showers, mainly on the 18th. During the next two days pressures still remained high over the country, but depressions were passing to the south and to the north, with a weak trough crossing the South Island. Rain was reported in Otago and Southland, and also in the Rotorua-Taupo area.

From the 23rd to the 31st the weather was fair or fine over most of the South Island and parts of the Wellington Province. For the first six days of this period pressure remained high to the south and south-east, while a shallow depression moved very slowly eastward past Northland. There was considerable rain from the easterlies in the Auckland and Hawke’s Bay Provinces, spreading on the 25th and 26th into Taranaki and the Wanganui district. Persistent fog and low cloud were reported in coastal areas of Otago and South Canterbury. The weather cleared in the north and east on the 29th. However, on the following day a weak trough was accompanied by southerly winds and cooler temperatures with rain again in the Auckland and Hawke’s Bay Provinces and also in the Nelson Province and on the Kaikoura coast. On the last day of the year an anticyclone covered the country and the weather was generally fair or fine.
