Meteorological Summary and Regulatory Notices

An anticyclone then moved across the North Island and the weather was fair or fine from the 20th to the 22nd. On the two following days a deep depression passed close to Southland, with exceptionally strong gales there. The associated trough of low pressure brought another change to cool south-westerlies. Rain was reported on the western and southern coasts of the South Island and about Cook Strait, with light falls in some other coastal districts. With rising pressures the weather improved on the 25th and 26th, apart from some rain at first on the coast from Dunedin to Invercargill.

On the 27th and 28th another smaller depression passed close to western Southland, again affecting Westland and the Southland and Otago coasts. The associated cold front crossed most of the country on the following day, accompanied by a period of rain; falls were very light in north-eastern areas of both Islands. On the last day of the month a ridge of high pressure brought fine weather to most districts. However, the approach of a depression over the south Tasman Sea again caused rain in parts of Southland and south Westland.
