NOTE—At stations where departures from normal have an asterisk, the temperature record has been maintained for less than 10 years, the rainfall record for less than 20 years. Rainfall normals have been revised and now refer to the standard period 1921–50. Where observations are not available for the whole period, or where the site of the rain gauge has been changed, the normals are partly interpolated.
NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR NOVEMBER 1959
General: November was windy and changeable, and comparatively dry. In many districts pasture growth was less than usual for the time of the year and more rain would have been appreciated. However, in Southland and parts of Otago growth was reported to be adequate.
Strong north-westerly gales were reported on several occasions. On the 6th and 9th they affected mainly areas about Cook Strait. On the 23rd they caused considerable damage to power installations in Southland.
Rainfall: In northern districts of both Islands and in eastern districts of the North Island rainfall was only half the average value. Elsewhere it was mainly about three-quarters of the normal value, except on the West Coast and in Southland and most of Otago, where there was a slight excess.
Temperatures: Temperatures were above average by about a degree, except on the West Coast. Highest departures of 2–3 degrees were experienced in parts of Canterbury and Marlborough. The warmest day in Canterbury was the 22nd, when the temperature at Ashburton reached 89 degrees. Other warm days in Canterbury, nearly all in north-westerly conditions, were 5, 13, 19, 29, and 30.
Snow was reported to low levels in parts of Otago on the 8th. The ranges of Otago and Southland also received a coating of snow on the 24th.
Sunshine: Sunshine was below average, except in eastern districts north of Dunedin and in parts of Westland. Largest deficiencies of 30–60 hours were recorded in western districts from Hamilton to Westport. For New Plymouth with 159 hours and Palmerston North with 121 hours it was one of the cloudiest Novembers on record.
The Gisborne - Hawke’s Bay - Taupo area and parts of coastal Canterbury were favoured with 20–30 hours more sunshine than usual.
Weather Sequence: On the 1st the weather was fair or fine, under the influence of an anticyclone centred east of the North Island. During the next three days a weak trough moved over the country, but the only district which received a substantial amount of rain was the West Coast.
On the 5th and 6th a very deep depression passed far to the south and the associated trough of low pressure crossed the country. North-westerly winds reached gale force in many districts, causing some damage about Cook Strait. Rain was more or less general; it was heavy on the West Coast but there were only very light falls in Hawke’s Bay and Canterbury. On the following day the weather cleared temporarily as a ridge of high pressure crossed the country. Another deep depression passed far to the south from the 8th to the 11th with general rain, and strong gales about Cook Strait. A change to cool south-westerlies also occurred, with snow to low levels in Otago on the 8th. On the 12th an anticyclone was centred west of the North Island and there was another brief interval of fine weather.
From the 13th to the 16th a trough became stationary over the South Island with rain on the West Coast and in most of Southland and Otago. During the next three days the trough moved on to the North Island while a small depression developed west of Auckland and moved south-eastward. Rain covered the North Island and the northern half of the South Island, with some considerable falls about Cook Strait and in North Taranaki.
