was centred west of Auckland, but the passage of a weak trough
over the South Island caused conditions to remain unsettled on
the West Coast. On the following day a depression developed off
Westland and deepened rapidly, moving southward. Strong north-
westerly gales were reported in Cook Strait; rain affected mainly
western districts as far north as Taranaki. There were particularly
heavy falls in the Alps, with floods in several Canterbury rivers. A
southerly change on the 27th brought showers to some eastern
districts.
For the next two days an anticyclone was centred over Northland,
and the weather was fair. However, on the 30th the passage of
yet another depression to the south-west caused rain in most areas
south of the Auckland Province. On the last day of the month a
south-westerly airstream covered the country, with showers on the
coast in the South Island.
