NOTE.--At stations where departures from normal have an asterisk, the temperature record has been maintained for less than ten years, the rainfall record for less than twenty years. Rainfall normals have been revised and now refer to the standard period 1921–50. Where observations are not available for the whole period, or where the site of the rain gauge has been changed, the normals are partly interpolated.

NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR JULY 1958

General: For the most part July was a month of comparatively low rainfall. It was also very cloudy in the north-east and very frosty in the south. The dry conditions proved favourable to stock, but in some areas the cold was considered to be too severe.

Rainfall: Rainfall was below average, except in the Auckland and Taranaki Provinces. In Wairarapa, Canterbury, Central Otago, and Fjordland it was less than half the normal value. Parts of North Canterbury received practically no rain.

On the other hand, it was a very wet month for the Whangarei-Bay of Islands area, with totals ranging from 8 to 20 in.

Exceptionally heavy hailstorms were reported in New Plymouth, Auckland, and Opotiki on the 23rd.

Temperatures: Temperatures were mainly close to normal over the North Island. However, in the South Island it was colder than usual, and over most of Canterbury, Otago and Southland departures exceeded 2 degrees. For Alexandra, with an average temperature of 31°, it was the coldest of any month in 30 years of record.

In inland Canterbury and Central Otago ground frosts were recorded almost every day – in fact, a few places had frosts every day of the month.

Snow fell on the 9th and 10th on the high country of the South Island.

Sunshine: Sunshine was appreciably below normal over the North Island and in parts of Central Otago. For eastern districts of the North Island from Bay of Plenty to Hawke’s Bay and also for Alexandra it was the cloudiest July on record.

The West Coast and parts of Canterbury were favoured with somewhat sunnier weather than usual.

Weather Sequence: For the first eight days pressures were high over the South Island, and a series of depressions passed eastward to the north of the country. Unsettled conditions prevailed in the Auckland Province north of Hamilton, and at times light rain extended to east coast districts as far south as Christchurch. Over the remainder of the South Island the weather was fine but frosty.

From the 9th to the 11th a small depression moved eastward over Southland, and the associated trough of low pressure crossed New Zealand. Rain fell in western districts of both islands and in the far south; considerable snow was reported in the Alps and in Otago. During the next three days an anticyclone moved across the country, with mainly fair weather.

From the 15th to the 23rd a series of depressions from the central Tasman Sea crossed the South Island. Conditions remained unsettled except in eastern districts from Gisborne to Christchurch, which however received some rain on the 18th. The 18th was, in fact, the wettest day of the month in many areas, and there were some considerable falls in northern districts of both islands.

By the 24th an anticyclone was centred near Campbell Island. A depression near North Cape then passed down the east coast of the Auckland Province, with rain in Northland and light falls also in eastern districts of both islands. On the 26th and 27th pressure remained low over and to the east of the country, but showers were confined to coastal districts from New Plymouth and Gisborne southward. On the following day a depression passed eastward close to Southland and Otago, with rain mainly in coastal districts of the latter province. At the same time a complex depression was approaching from the North Tasman Sea, causing rain once again in Northland. This depression crossed the country during the last three days of the month, bringing light rain to the North Island and some coastal districts of the South Island.
