SPECIAL ORDER
In pursuance and exercise of the powers conferred on it by
section 23 of the Counties Act 1920, the Council resolves by
way of special order to alter and redefine the boundaries of
the ridings of the County of Ashburton as follows:
MOUNT HUTT RIDING
All that area in the County of Ashburton, Canterbury
Land District, bounded by a line commencing at a point in the
middle of the Rakaia River in line with Lauriston-Barrhill
road; thence south-westerly to and along that road and
Lauriston Road and westerly along Thompsons Track to the
easternmost corner of Rural Section 34170; thence north-
westerly along the north-eastern boundaries of Rural Sections
34170, 30966, and 34169 to Lyndhurst Road; thence south-
westerly along that road and Braemar Road to and along the
south-eastern boundary of Rural Section 19532, the eastern
and southern boundaries of Rural Section 7967, the south-
eastern boundaries of Rural Sections 25911, 19972, 14994,
14001, 17537, 14000, 17535, 13999, and 14992, to Ashburton-
Methven road; thence north-westerly generally along that road
and Ashburton River Road to and along the north-western
boundaries of Rural Sections 37937 and 13973 and its pro-
duction to the middle of the north branch of the Ashburton
River; thence north-westerly generally along the middle of
that river to and along the southern and western boundaries
of Run 119, the south-eastern and south-western boundaries
of Run 118A, the south-western boundary of Run 118 to the
middle of Lake Stream; thence northerly along the middle of
that stream to the middle of the Rakaia River; thence easterly
and south-easterly generally along the middle of that river to
the point of commencement.
SOUTH RAKAIA RIDING
All that area in the County of Ashburton, Canterbury Land
District, bounded by a line commencing at a point on the
boundary of the Mount Hutt Riding, previously described, the
said point being in the middle of the Rakaia River in line
with Lauriston-Barrhill road; thence south-easterly generally
along the middle of that river to the sea; thence south-
westerly to and along the mean high-water mark of the sea
to a point in line with Boundary Road; thence north-
westerly generally to and along that road, the Main South
Road, and Mitcham-Chertsey road to Dromore-Hatfield road;
thence south-westerly along that road to Dromore-Methven
road; thence north-westerly along that road to Mitcham Road;
thence north-easterly along that road to a point in line with
the south-western boundary of Rural Section 27849; thence
north-westerly generally to and along that boundary, the south-
eastern and south-western boundaries of Rural Section 37627,
the south-western boundary of Rural Section 37626, the south-
eastern boundary of Rural Section 37628, to and along
Dromore-Methven road to Lauriston Road; thence northerly
generally along that road, to and along the south-western
and north-western boundaries of Rural Section 37625 and the
south-western boundary of Rural Section 37621 to Braemar-
Lauriston road; thence north-easterly generally along that
road and Thompsons Track to and along the boundary of the
Mount Hutt Riding, previously described, to the point of
commencement.
WAKANUI RIDING
All that area in the County of Ashburton, Canterbury Land
District, bounded by a line commencing at a point on the
boundary of the South Rakaia Riding, previously described,
the said point being the junction of Dromore-Methven,
Dromore-Hatfield roads and Main South Road; thence north-
easterly and south-easterly along the said riding boundary to
the mean high-water mark of the sea; thence south-easterly
along that mean high-water mark to a point in the middle
of the Ashburton River; thence north-westerly along the
middle of that river to a point in line with the south-eastern
side of Trevors Road, the said roadside being the south-
eastern boundary of the Borough of Ashburton, as described
in Gazette 1955, page 1158; thence north-easterly generally
to and along the boundary of the said borough to the Main
South Road; thence north-easterly along that road to the
point of commencement.
UPPER ASHBURTON RIDING
All that area in the County of Ashburton, Canterbury Land
District, bounded by a line commencing at a point on the boun-
daries of the Wakanui and South Rakaia Ridings, previously
described, the said point being the junction of Dromore-
Methven road and Main South Road; thence south-westerly
along the boundary of the Wakanui Riding to the boundary
of the Borough of Ashburton, as described in Gazette 1955,
page 1158; thence generally north-westerly, southerly and south-
westerly along the boundary of the said borough to a point
in the middle of the South Island Main Trunk Railway, the
said point being in line with the south-western boundary of
Reserve 1422, Block XVI, Westerfield Survey District; thence
south-westerly along that railway to the middle of the Hinds
River; thence north-westerly along the middle of that river
to a point in line with the south-eastern boundary of Rural
Section 31100; thence north-easterly generally to and along
that boundary, the crossing of Barford Road to and along
Tanks Road, the crossing of Valetta-Westerfield road, to and
along the north-western boundaries of Rural Sections 21336,
34631, 8860, 26412, 34026, 36011, and its production to the
middle of the south branch of the Ashburton River; thence
north-westerly generally along the middle of that river and
the middle of Taylors Stream to a point in line with a road
forming the south-eastern boundary of Rural Section 34145;
thence north-easterly generally to and along that road, Alford
Forest Cemetery Road, and Earlys Road to and along the
north-western boundary of Lot 4, D.P. 6237, and its pro-
duction to the middle of the north branch of the Ashburton
River, being a point on the boundary of the Mount Hutt
Riding, as previously described; thence south-easterly generally
along the boundary of the said riding and the boundary of
the South Rakaia Riding, as previously described, to the
point of commencement.
ASHBURTON RIDING
All that area in the County of Ashburton, Canterbury Land
District, bounded by a line commencing at a point on the
South Island Main Trunk Railway in the middle of the Hinds
River, the said point being on the boundary of the Upper
Ashburton Riding, as previously described; thence north-
easterly along the middle of the said railway to the boundary
of the Borough of Ashburton, described in Gazette 1955, page
1158; thence southerly, north-easterly, north-westerly, north-
easterly, and south-easterly generally along the boundary of
the said borough to a point on the boundary of the Wakanui
Riding, as previously described; thence south-westerly and
south-easterly generally along the boundary of the said
riding, to the sea; thence south-westerly to and along the mean
high-water mark of the sea to the middle of the Hinds River;
thence north-westerly generally along the middle of that
river, to and along the northern boundary of Lot 2, D.P.
8693, the crossing of Lower Beach Road, along the eastern
boundaries of Rural Sections 37648, 37565, and 37743, the
crossing of Poplar Road, and along Hinds River Road to a
point in line with the western boundary of Rural Section
18533; thence southerly to and along that boundary to its
intersection with the western boundary of part Lot 12, D.P.
2375; thence north-westerly generally along that boundary
and the eastern boundaries of Lots 1 and 2, D.P. 9315, the
crossing of Surveyors Road, to and along the middle of the
Hinds River to the point of commencement.
RANGITATA RIDING
All that area in the County of Ashburton, Canterbury Land
District, bounded by a line commencing at a point on the
South Island Main Trunk Railway in the middle of the Hinds
River, the said point being on the boundaries of the Upper
Ashburton. and Ashburton Ridings, previously described;
thence south-easterly along the boundary of the Ashburton
Riding, aforesaid, to the sea; thence south-westerly to and
along the mean high-water mark of the sea to the middle of
the Rangitata River; thence north-westerly generally along
the middle of that river to a point in line with the north-
western boundary of Rural Section 28913; thence north-
easterly generally to and along that boundary to and along
Rangitata Terrace Road to Shepherds Bush Road; thence
south-easterly along that road and north-easterly along Rangi-
tata-Mayfield and Mayfield-Tinwald roads to the middle of
the Hinds River; thence south-easterly generally along the
middle of that river to and along the boundary of the Upper
Ashburton Riding, aforementioned, to the point of com-
mencement.
MOUNT SOMERS RIDING
All that area in the County of Ashburton, Canterbury Land
District, bounded by a line commencing at Whitcombe Pass
on the summit of the Main Divide between the Canterbury
and Westland Land Districts; thence south-easterly gene-
rally to and along the middle of Louper Stream and the
middle of the Rakaia River to the north-western corner of the
Mount Hutt Riding, previously described; thence south-
easterly and south-westerly generally along the boundaries of
that riding and the Upper Ashburton and Rangitata Ridings,
previously described, to the middle of the Rangitata River;
thence north-westerly generally along the middle of that
river to and south-westerly generally along the middle of
Forest Stream to its source on the Two Thumb Range; thence
northerly generally along the summit of that range to McClure
Peak on the Main Divide, aforesaid; thence north-easterly
along the Main Divide to the point of commencement.

Inhabitants of the County of Ashburton was hereunto affixed
by the authority of the said Council of the said county by
G. Callaghan and E. T. Grigg, members of the said Council,

boundaries of the ridings of the County of Ashburton, under
the powers vested in it by the Counties Act 1920 and all other
powers thereunto enabling, was duly made by the Ashburton
County Council at a meeting of the said Council held at its
offices, Baring Square, Ashburton, on the 17th day of August
1956.
