NEW ZEALAND--NORTH ISLAND--MANUKAU

Leading Line Across Manukau Bar

  1. Owing to the shifting of the banks to the north, the existing leads cannot be used when crossing the bar.

  2. A recent survey (1954) indicates that, although the banks are continually moving, ships should now cross the bar with the South Head lighthouse (Gp.Fl. (2) 30 secs.) bearing 091° continuing on this course and nothing to the north, until the leads on the South Head are in transit bearing 077½°; course should then be altered to pass Paratutai.

  3. The cautionary notes in the New Zealand Pilot, the New Zealand Nautical Almanac, Volume II, 1954, and on the chart should be kept well in mind.

  4. The following amendments are to be made to the New Zealand Nautical Almanac and Tide Tables, Vol. II, 1954:

(a) Page 76, line 5, delete 'in use ... main channel.'
(b) Page 76, line 13, amend to read 'The beacons when in transit bear 077½°'.
(c) Page 76, delete lines 19-25 inclusive.
(d) Page 76, insert paragraph 2 above after 'Directions for entering'.

  1. On the plan of Manukau Harbour in N.Z.N.A. and Tide Tables, 1955, Vol. II-

(a) The position of South Head light is to be amended to 120° 1·49 miles from Paratutai light.
(b) A leading line is to be inserted in a direction 271½° from the amended position of South Head light and the words 'South Head Light bearing 091° leads over the bar (1954)' is to be appended above this line
(c) The broken line showing the extremity of Orwell Bank and the words 'Heavy Break' to the south of the leading line are to be expunged.
