Information About Conspicuous Hills

PENDING the issue of New Zealand Charts Nos. 7 and 8, and in view of the difficulty of fixing on the present Admiralty Chart No. 2528, the positions of the following easily identifiable hills are given:

From Cape Kidnappers light, in position lat. 39° 38'.2 S., long. 177° 03'.3 E. (approx.)—

Te Mata ....... 1,307 ft. ....... 248° ....... 9.1 miles.
Kahuranaki .... 2,116 ft. ....... 228½° .... 13.6 miles.
Rangitapu ..... 1,543 ft. ....... 207° ....... 27.2 miles.
Omakere ...... 1,640 ft. ....... 208° ....... 30.3 miles.

From Castlepoint light, in position lat. 40° 54'.8 S., long. 176° 13'.2 E. (approx.)—

Te Awaputahi ... 1,907 ft. ....... 018° ....... 32.4 miles.
Cape Turnagain . 950 ft. (approx.) 035° ....... 30.3 miles.
Kereru ........ 1,124 ft. ....... 023° ....... 19.7 miles.
Kupukori ...... 1,961 ft. ....... 359° ....... 14.2 miles.
Peak .......... 1,411 ft. ....... 261° ....... 4.3 miles.

From Cape Palliser light, in position lat. 41° 36'.8 S., long. 175° 18'.0 E. (approx.)—

Heights ....... 1,725 ft. ....... 052° ....... 18.7 miles.

The following positions of hills are wrongly charted as in valleys when they are in fact identifiable summits:

From Cape Palliser light—

Pukemuri ...... ....... ....... 057° ....... 10.4 miles.
Te Awaiti ..... ....... ....... 056½° ...... 14.2 miles.

The position of Cape Turnagain has been found to lie farther southward.
