β¨ Customs Decisions
Conditions deteriorated generally again on the 20th and 21st
as a depression passed southward to the east of the North Island
and an extensive trough of low pressure moved across the country
from the west. On this occasion many parts of Hawke's Bay
received their first appreciable rain for nearly six weeks, but in
Canterbury falls were still too light to be of any real benefit. On
the 22nd a ridge of high pressure gave fair weather, but on the
following day there was further rain over most of the South Island
with the passage of a weak trough. On the 24th this trough became
stationary through Northland, causing rain at times for three days
in the far north and in the Gisborne district. Barometers were now
high over the whole country, but on the 27th there were a few
showers on the east coast with the passage of another weak trough.
For the last four days of the month an anticyclone was centred
to the east, and the weather was fair over most of the country.
However, two depressions from the Tasman Sea passing west of
Southland caused unsettled weather on the western and southern
coasts of the South Island.
