Consent to the Consignment of Potatoes From the South Island to the North Island—Notice No. Ag. 5673
PURSUANT to the Board of Trade (Potatoes) Regulations 1953, the Director-General of Agriculture hereby—
(1) Revokes the consent to the consignment of potatoes given on the 29th day of September 1953, which was published in the Gazette of the 1st day of October 1953 at page 1588, in so far as it relates to the consignment of potatoes from any part of the South Island, other than Nelson, to the North Island.
(2) Consents to the consignment of the following potatoes from any part of the South Island, other than Nelson, to the North Island:
(a) Table potatoes accompanied by a certificate or letter from a grader appointed by the New Zealand Grain, Seed, and Produce Merchants’ Federation certifying that the potatoes are F.A.Q. or Good Table Grade:
(b) Certified seed potatoes bearing the official certification tag of the Department of Agriculture:
(c) Uncertified seed potatoes accompanied by a certificate or letter from a grader appointed by the New Zealand Grain, Seed, and Produce Merchants’ Federation certifying that the potatoes are F.A.Q. (Uncertified Seed) Grade, or are of that Grade except that they are smaller in size.
(d) Consignments of not more than two sacks of potatoes addressed to the one consignee.

Board of Trade Notice No. 89—Public Inquiry into Import Duties on Buttons
- The Board of Trade proposes to inquire into and report upon the question of what rates of import duty should be imposed under the following tariff items:
Tariff Item 146: Buttons, crochet, and similar.
Tariff Item 147: Buttons n.e.i.
The present rates of import duty in respect of these items are:
Tariff Item 146—
British Preferential: Free.
Most Favoured Nation: 20%.
General: 20%.*
Tariff Item 147—
British Preferential: 3%.
General: 3%.
- Plus surtax at the rate of nine-fortieths of the amount of duty.

During the course of this inquiry the Board will consider the desirability of reclassifying the goods in question for the purposes of the Customs Tariff. In addition, the Board will consider whether such of the goods in question as are now subject to import licensing should be exempted from the requirements of import licensing, and in respect of such of the goods in question as are already exempt whether import licensing should be re-imposed in respect of any of them.

For the purpose of taking evidence on the review of these tariff items, the Board will hold a public inquiry commencing on Tuesday, 5 October 1954, at 10.30 a.m., in the Board Room, First Floor, Departmental Buildings, Stout Street, Wellington.

Any person who intends to tender evidence should comply with the notes for the guidance of witnesses (2nd edition) which have been approved by the Board. A copy of these notes may be obtained from the office of any Collector of Customs or from the undernamed.

A typewritten statement of the evidence to be tendered, compiled in accordance with these notes of guidance, should be lodged with the undernamed on or before Tuesday, 21 September 1954. Each statement will in general need to be presented under oath at the public inquiry by the person tendering it.

Board of Trade Notice No. 90—Public Inquiry into Import Duties on Sporting Requisites and Fishing-tackle
- The Board of Trade proposes to inquire into and report upon the question of what rates of import duty should be imposed on the goods mentioned hereunder and included in the following tariff items:
Tariff Item 239 (1): Sporting, gaming, and athletic requisites, n.e.i., including billiard requisites, n.c.i.
Ex Tariff Item 239 (2): Fishing-tackle n.e.i., including artificial flies and other baited hooks.
The present rates of import duty in respect of these items are:
British Preferential: 20%.
Australian Agreement: 25%.
Most Favoured Nation: 45%.
General: 50%.*
- Plus surtax at the rate of nine-fortieths of the amount of duty.

(a) Socks or stockings of silk.
(b) Socks or stockings of artificial silk or nylon.
(c) Other.
The present rates of import duty in respect of this item are:
Tariff Item 136 (7) (a)—
British Preferential: 25%.*
Australian Agreement: 40%.
Canadian Agreement: 55%.
General: 65%.†
Tariff Item 136 (7) (b)—
British Preferential: 25%.*
Australian Agreement: 40%.
