Board of Trade Notice No. 63—Review of Import Licensing
IT is hereby notified that the Board of Trade has examined the objections lodged to the proposed exemption from import licensing of the following items in the Import Licensing Schedule and has decided not to recommend de-control until after a review of the appropriate tariff duties takes place.
Tariff Item. Description.
Ex. 104 (1) Disinfectants n.e.i. including coal-tar acids in combination with alkalis to form solutions which will give saponaceous disinfectants upon the addition of water.
Ex. 119 Wettable sulphurs.
Ex. 124 (8) Ammonium hydroxide (ammonia solutions); cleansing preparations other than simple (unmixed) salts.
Ex. 124 (8) Silver nitrate; caustic soda in packages of 7 lb. or under; solutions of hypochlorites.
Ex. 124 (8) Hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide).
Ex. 338 (2) Plug sockets or bases, other than metal protected industrial type with round pins; plug tops other than metal or rubber-clad industrial type with round pins; flush plates; cord connectors; tap-ons; indoor or switchboard type fuses up to 30 amps; house service or outdoor fuses or cut-outs up to 150 amps; 5 and 10 amp flush type and surface type domestic switches; through cord switches.
362 (5) (a) Knees, bends, elbows, junction or inspection boxes including covers therefor, and other fittings, n.e.i., for pipes, piping, tubes, or tubing, viz., of brass or other copper alloy.
Ex. 376 (1) Metal wove wire (not including wove wire for mattresses).
Ex. 419 (2) Shaving brushes.
Ex. 419 (2) Paint brushes.
Ex. 419 (2) Brushes, brushware and brooms n.e.i., &c. (excluding shaving brushes and paint brushes, artists’ brushes, brushes specially suited for dentists’ use, signwriters’, sable writers’ brushes and pencils, hairbrushes with bristles of whalebone; brushes, cleaning, for fitting to a hose).

Ex. 449 (2) (d) Straws, drinking, of paraffined paper.

Board of Trade Notice No. 64—Review of Import Licensing
IT is hereby notified that the Board of Trade has examined the objections lodged to the proposed exemption from import licensing of the following items in the Import Licensing Schedule and has decided not to recommend de-control until after a review of the appropriate tariff duties takes place.

Ex. 338 (10) Radio hook-up, push-back, remit, ravine, slip-back, and lead-in wires and grid wires; microphone cable, single and twin core; single and multiple core inter-communication cable 10/.010 inches or equivalent.
Ex. 338 (10) All 2, 3, and 4 core flexibles up to size 65/.0076 inches or .0025 square inches in nominal cross-sectional area of each core; asbestos-filled or covered heater flexes; automotive cables.
Ex. 338 (10) Insulated cable and wire (specifications to be supplied) (excluding radio hook-up, push-back, remit, ravine, slip-back, and lead-in wires and grid wires; microphone cable, single and twin core; single and multiple core inter-communication cable 10/.010 inches or equivalent; all 2, 3, and 4 core flexibles up to size 65/.0076 inches or .0025 square inches in nominal cross-sectional area of each core: asbestos filled or covered heater flexes; automotive cables; winding wires, except plastic or rubber covered being wires for which a turn or turns are used in coils for electrical apparatus; lead, copper, or aluminium covered wires and cables; under-ground cables).

Board of Trade Notice No. 65—Public Inquiry Into Import Duties on Various Printed Goods
- The Board of Trade proposes to inquire into and report upon the question of what rates of import duty should be imposed under the following tariff items:
Tariff Item 276: Handbills n.e.i., circulars, programmes, playbills, printed posters, trade catalogues, price-lists, and fashion-plates. (Note.—This shall not apply to trade catalogues or price-lists of the goods of firms or persons having no established business in New Zealand or to cut samples mounted in books or on folders or cards or to colour cards provided that such books, folders, or cards are issued by and bear the name and overseas address of the firm or person whose goods are represented therein.)
Tariff Item 297: Paper, celluloid, or similar materials, and wrappers made from such materials, printed, lithographed, or ruled, n.e.i.
Tariff Item 303: Show-cards, and calendars, all kinds, including glacier stickers suited for exhibition on windows.
The present rates of import duty in respect of these items are:
Tariff Item 276—
British Preferential: 6d. per lb. plus surtax at the rate of nine-fortieths of the amount of duty in respect of goods imported from Ireland (except Northern Ireland), Union of South Africa, India, Pakistan, and Canada.
General: 1s. 6d. per lb. plus surtax at the rate of nine-fortieths of the amount of duty.
Tariff Item 297—
British Preferential: 20%.
Australian Agreement: 30%.
Canadian Agreement: 30%.
Most Favoured Nation: 50%.
General: 60% plus surtax at the rate of nine-fortieths of the amount of duty.
Tariff Item 303—
British Preferential: 20% plus surtax at the rate of nine-fortieths of the amount of duty in respect of goods imported from Ireland (except Northern Ireland), Union of South Africa, India, and Pakistan.
Australian Agreement: 30%.
Canadian Agreement: 30%.
General: 55% plus surtax at the rate of nine-fortieths of the amount of duty.

During the course of this inquiry, the Board will consider the desirability of re-classifying the goods in question for the purposes of the Customs Tariff. In addition, the Board will consider whether such of the goods in question as are now subject to import licensing should be exempted from the requirements of import licensing, and in respect of such of the goods in question as are already exempt, whether import licensing should be reimposed in respect of any of them.

For the purpose of taking evidence on the review of these tariff items, the Board will hold a public inquiry commencing on Tuesday, 4 August 1953, at 10.30 a.m. in the Board Room, First Floor, Departmental Building, Stout Street, Wellington.

Any person who intends to tender evidence should comply with the notes for the guidance of witnesses which have been approved by the Board. A copy of these notes may be obtained from the office of any Collector of Customs or from the undersigned.

A typewritten statement of the evidence to be tendered, compiled in accordance with these notes of guidance, should be lodged with the undersigned on or before Tuesday, 21 July 1953. Each statement will, in general, need to be presented under oath at the public inquiry by the person tendering it.

The Standards Act 1941-Draft New Zealand Standard Specification No. D.4343: Wooden Safety Matches
NOTICE is hereby given that the above draft New Zealand Standard Specification is now being circulated to affected interests for consideration and comment. The closing date fixed for such comment is 22 June 1953.
All persons who may be affected by this specification once it has been declared a Standard Specification by the Minister of Industries and Commerce may, at any time before the closing date for comments, obtain, on application, free copies from the New Zealand Standards Institute, Hamilton Chambers, 201 Lambton Quay (P.O. 195), Wellington, so as to have an opportunity to consider the draft and to comment thereon to the Standards Council or to an appropriate committee of the Council in accordance with subsection (3) of section 8 of the Standards Act 1941.
