Medical Council of New Zealand

THE following ruling has been made by the Medical Council and is published for the information of those concerned :—

HOUSE OFFICER SERVICE

  1. This ruling is to be read in conjunction with :—

(a) The resolution of the Council fixing 1 December 1952 as the date on and after which persons conditionally registered under the Medical Practitioners Act 1950 will be permitted to practise medicine and surgery only in an institution or hospital approved by the Minister of Health :

(b) The list of institutions or hospitals approved by the Minister of Health on 24 June 1952 for the purposes of section 10 (1) of the Medical Practitioners Act 1950 :

(c) The Medical Practitioners Registration Regulations 1952.

  1. No applicant shall be deemed to satisfy the Council that he has had satisfactory experience of the practice of medicine and surgery for the purposes of paragraph (a) of section 12 of the Act, unless :—

(a) During his employment as a house officer he has had in the aggregate six months’ experience in medicine or in one or more of the branches of medicine and in the aggregate six months’ experience in surgery or in one or more of the branches of surgery : Provided that—

(i) A period of experience in obstetrics not exceeding six months may be substituted for a period of experience of the same length in either medicine or surgery as the applicant may elect :

(ii) Where experience as a house officer is obtained in an appointment the duties of which are both medical and surgical, half of the period of such experience shall be deemed to be experience in medicine and half shall be deemed to be experience in surgery.

(b) He produces to the Council a certificate from the Medical Superintendent of each approved institution or hospital in which he obtained experience to satisfy the requirements of the last preceding paragraph (or from such other person in authority therein as the Council in any particular case may approve) to the effect that the applicant has satisfactorily carried out the duties of the position.
