Notice to Mariners No. 36 of 1951

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 25th July, 1951.

NEW ZEALAND NAUTICAL ALMANAC AND TIDE-TABLES

Deletion of Ephemeris of the Sun

THE Admiralty Abridged Nautical Almanac’s complete redesign for the year 1952 differs radically from early editions, both in principle and arrangement. The revised Almanac contains 442 pages, an increase of 128 pages on the former editions, and since the insertion of the ephemeris for the sun in like manner in the “New Zealand Nautical Almanac and Tide-tables” would increase the size of the volume very considerably, it has been decided that the duplication is not warranted.

Inquiries have proved that the majority of mariners purchasing the “New Zealand Nautical Almanac and Tide-tables” also purchase the Admiralty abridged edition as the New Zealand publication is limited to the elements for navigation by the sun.

The acute world shortage of paper demands that unnecessary duplication must be eliminated. For the above reasons it has therefore been decided that the 1952 “New Zealand Nautical Almanac and Tide-tables,” and subsequent editions, will not contain the ephemeris for the sun, and mariners requiring this information should obtain it from the Admiralty abridged edition.

W. C. SMITH, Secretary.
