Now, therefore, I, Lieutenant-General Sir Bernard Cyril Freyberg, the Governor-General of the Dominion of New Zealand, in pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the said Act, do hereby reserve, subject to the reservations and conditions imposed by section 59 of the Land Act, 1948, and subject also to the reservations imposed by section 8 of the Coal Mines Amendment Act, 1950, the land in the Nelson Land District described in the Schedule hereto for recreation purposes.

WHEREAS by section 167 of the Land Act, 1948, it is enacted that the Governor-General may, from time to time, set apart as a reserve, notwithstanding that the same may be then held under pastoral lease or pastoral occupation licence, any Crown land for any purpose which, in his opinion, is desirable in the public interest, and notice thereof shall be published in the New Zealand Gazette:

Vesting the Control of a Scenic Reserve in the Lake Kaniere Scenic Board

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon him by section 13 of the Scenery Preservation Act, 1908, His Excellency the Governor-General of the Dominion of New Zealand doth hereby vest the control of the reserve described in the Schedule hereto (being land reserved under the said Act), for the period of five years from the date hereof (unless previously altered or revoked under the said Act), in the undermentioned persons, namely:—
The Mayor of Hokitika, ex officio,
The Chairman of the Westland County Council, or his Deputy, ex officio,
The Commissioner of Crown Lands for the Westland Land District, ex officio,
The Conservator of Forests for the Westland Forest-conservation Region, ex officio,
Albert Richard Elcock,
George Kennedy,
Jack Preston,
Paul Edmund Louis Renton,
John Noble Robinson,
Frederick William Ross, and
Ronald Ross,
who are hereby constituted for that purpose a special Board by the name of the Lake Kaniere Scenic Board (herein referred to as the Board), in trust, for the preservation of scenery, and with the powers and subject to the conditions hereinafter contained, that is to say,—

The first meeting of the Board shall be held on Thursday, the 12th day of July, 1951, at 10.30 o’clock a.m., in the office of the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Hokitika, and thereafter the Board shall meet for the transaction of business at such time and place as may from time to time be fixed by the Board.

The members of the Board shall at their first meeting, and thereafter at the annual meeting hereinafter mentioned, elect one of themselves to be Chairman, who may join in the discussion and shall have an original as well as a casting vote. The Chairman shall hold office until the election of his successor.

Special meetings may be convened by the Chairman, provided that two days’ notice of such meeting is given to each member, specifying the business to be transacted at such special meeting, and no other business than that so specified shall be transacted at such meeting.

Any six members of the Board shall form a quorum. Any meeting may be adjourned from time to time.

All questions shall be determined by the majority of votes of the members of the Board present at the meeting.

If at any meeting the Chairman is not present at the time appointed for holding the same, the members present shall choose one of their number to be Chairman for such meeting.

If, by resignation, death, incapacity, or otherwise, the seat of any member shall be or become vacant, or if any member absents himself, without reasonable cause, from three consecutive meetings of the Board, the Governor-General shall have power to appoint any other person to be a member of the Board in his stead.

The Board shall prepare and submit at an annual meeting to be held in the month of April in each year a report of the proceedings of the Board for the previous year ending on the 31st day of March, together with a statement of the receipts and expenditure of the Board for such year. A copy of every such report and statement, certified by the Chairman to be correct, shall be sent to the Minister in Charge of Scenery Preservation as soon as possible after each annual meeting.

The Board shall control the said reserve in accordance with the provisions of the said Act and of the regulations made thereunder.

WESTLAND LAND DISTRICT.—LAKE KANIERE SCENIC RESERVE
ALL those areas containing a total of 18,467 acres 1 rood 1·8 perches, more or less, and described as follows:—
Reserve 1177, Blocks VI, VII, X, XI, XII, XV, and XVI, Kaniere Survey District: Area, 18,300 acres, more or less.
Also Reserve 1775, Blocks XI and XII, Kaniere Survey District: Area, 11 acres 2 roods, more or less.
Also Reserves 1411, 1211, 1774, 1795, 1816, 1824, 1825, 1850, and 1851, Block XI, Kaniere Survey District: Total area, 155 acres 3 roods 1·8 perches, more or less.
As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor-General, this 29th day of June, 1951.
