NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR SEPTEMBER, 1950

General.—Mild temperatures combined with an absence of stormy conditions made September a very favourable month. In the South Island the mild, dry weather was very welcome during the lambing season, and high percentages were being recorded. All stock is reported to be in excellent condition. Growth of crops and pastures was somewhat retarded by lack of rain, but conditions were improving in this respect towards the end of the month.

Rainfall.—With few exceptions rainfall was well below normal. The only areas with a significant excess were the Whangarei and MacKenzie counties. Totals in Gisborne, Northern Hawke's Bay, Taranaki, and South Westland were close to the average.

The remainder of the South Island experienced a very dry month, rainfall generally being under half the average. In several places it was the driest September in the last 25 years.

Temperatures.—Mean temperatures were everywhere above normal. For the Dominion as a whole it was the mildest September for over 20 years. The departure from normal was about 2°F. in the interior of the North Island, but it exceeded 3°F. in Central Otago. In coastal districts temperatures were, in the main, less than a degree above normal.

Sunshine.—East of the ranges, and in Northland and Southland sunshine was below the average. The deficiency was small except in Canterbury and in Wellington City where it was equivalent to an hour a day. There was a moderate surplus from Waikato to Manawatu.

Weather Sequence.—Following a brief clearance with the passage of a ridge, the weather deteriorated rapidly on the 2nd with the arrival of the frontal system accompanying a depression located in the Southern Tasman. The development of a secondary depression was responsible for heavier rainfall occurring over the southern half of the North Island.

With a large anticyclone advancing across the North Tasman Sea, the weather cleared in the east on the 5th, and soon afterwards in the north. Barometers remained low to the south and showery westerly conditions prevailed in Westland and coastal Southland. The northern anticyclone moved eastwards past North Cape on the 8th.

Temperatures dropped sharply behind a cold front which crossed the South Island on the 10th. When this front passed off to the north of the morning of the 12th, an intense anticyclone covered the South Island. During the next few days the anticyclone gradually extended over the whole country and most districts enjoyed a spell of settled weather until the 20th. In the Gisborne district, however, showers persisted until the 17th, while other east coast districts experienced light rains on the 14th and 15th, mainly due to the influence of a remote tropical storm which passed some 500 miles north-east of Auckland on the 15th.

Skies became overcast on the 21st as a shallow trough, accompanied by a broad belt of light rain, began to move slowly eastwards across the country. During its passage, which occupied two days, a shallow low pressure centre developed in the North. The latter remained almost stationary until it slowly dissipated on the 26th, with the result that rain continued intermittently over North Auckland. Elsewhere the weather cleared by the 24th, except for fairly widespread morning fogs.

An anticyclone moved off to the east on the 27th after its centre had crossed the South Island. The approach of a shallow but extensive disturbance from the Tasman Sea brought a general deterioration in the weather. Skies remained overcast and light rains fell over the entire country as the centre of the disturbance moved leisurely across the South Island. Conditions improved in the west and south on the 29th when an anticyclone which had moved up from the south began to intensify east of Otago.
