Defining River, Extended-river, and Extreme Limits

Marine Department, Wellington, 7th November, 1949.

IN pursuance and exercise of the power and authority conferred upon me by section 189 of the Shipping and Seamen Act, 1908, I, Frederick Hackett, Minister of Marine, do hereby define the limits for the ports set forth in the first column of the Schedule hereto, within which restricted-limit steamships, sailing ships, and ships propelled by gas, oil, fluid, electricity, or any mechanical power other than steam, and to which restricted-limit certificates are issued, may ply, to be those set forth in the second, third, and fourth columns of the said Schedule respectively, and I do divide such limits into river and smooth-water limits, extended-river and partially smooth-water limits, and extreme limits respectively; and I do also hereby revoke all Warrants heretofore in force defining any of the said limits.

Akaroa .. .. Not seaward of a right line drawn from Timutimu Head to Trueni Pt. Not beyond a distance of 1 mile seaward of a right line drawn from Timutimu Head to Akaroa Lighthouse Between Akaroa and Lyttelton.
Aotea .. .. Inside a right line drawn from Potahi to Kapua-te-Mauna Nil .. .. .. .. Nil.
Auckland .. .. Inside Rangitoto Reef, Motu Kora Channel, Motuihi Channel, inside a right line drawn from Home Bay Pt. to the northern point of the entrance to Matiatia Bay, Tamaki Strait, not beyond a line drawn from Raukura Point in a 000° direction to Ponui Island, and inside Waiheke Channel All those waters of the Hauraki Gulf inside a right line drawn from the north point of Colville Bay on the Coromandel Peninsula to Shearer Rock off Tiritiri Island, and thence to Tawharanui Pt. Nil.
Awanui .. .. Within a right line drawn from Blackney Pt. to the outer visible Motu Tara Rock, thence in a direction 260° to the foreshore of Rangaunu Bay Inside a right line drawn from Grenville Pt. to Cape Karikari Nil.
Bay of Islands .. .. Inside of a line drawn from the eastern point of Wairoa Bay to the western end of Urupukapuka via north-eastern end of eastern Black Rock, northern ends of Motuarohia, Moturua, Motukiakia, and a line from Urupukapuka opposite Round Island to western end of Richards Peninsula Inside of a line drawn from the eastern extremity of Cape Wiwiki in a 000° direction for 0·5 miles; thence 094° for 11 miles; thence to Cape Brett Seasonal: For vessels engaged in deep-sea sports-fishing only:— From 1st May to 31st October: Inside an arc of a circle of 13 miles radius drawn with Cape Brett Lighthouse as centre and a line drawn 090° to the circle from southern point of Whangamumu entrance From 1st November to 30th April: Inside an arc of a circle of 20 miles radius drawn with Cape Brett Lighthouse as centre and a line drawn 090° to the circle from southern point of Whangamumu entrance Nil.
Bluff .. .. Inside a right line drawn from Stirling Pt. Lighthouse to Tiwai Rocks Within a radius of 20 miles from Stirling Pt. Lighthouse Nil.
Catlin River .. .. Within Catlin River Heads Nil .. .. .. .. Nil.
Coromandel .. .. Inside a right line drawn from Deadman Pt. to Hautapu Pt. Inside a right line drawn from the northern point of Colville Bay to Shearer Rock, thence to Tawharanui Pt. Nil.
Dunedin and Port Chalmers Inside a right line drawn from Taiaroa Head Lighthouse to the North Mole extremity. (Tugs not beyond 1 mile outside Taiaroa Head) Within a radius of 30 miles from Taiaroa Head Lighthouse (fishing-boats only). Pilot-vessels not beyond 8 miles outside Taiaroa Head. Dredgers within a radius of 5 miles from Taiaroa Head Lighthouse Nil.
French Pass .. .. All the navigable waters bounded by right lines drawn from Francis Head to Halfway Pt., and from Okuri Pt. to Sauvage Pt. Inside, and 2 miles seaward, of a right line drawn from Cape Koamaru and Halfway Pt. via Walker Rock, northern end of Nukuaiata and southern end of Trio Island, and inside a line drawn from Cape Soucis to Sauvage Pt. Nil.
Gisborne .. .. Inside the bar of the Turanganui River Inside a right line drawn from Tuahine Pt. to Young Nick’s Head. Fishing-boats between Cape Runaway and the northern end of Portland Island Nil.
Great Barrier Island—Port Abercrombie and Port Fitzroy Inside a right line drawn from Separation Pt. to Wellington Head, thence to False Head; thence to Pyramid Rock; thence to the southern extremity of Junction Islands; thence by a right line drawn north to Great Barrier Island Within a radius of 3 miles from the coast-line of Great Barrier Island Nil.
Port Tryphena: .. .. Inside a right line drawn from the outer southern entrance point to North Head Within a radius of 3 miles from the coast-line of Great Barrier Island Nil.
Greymouth .. .. Inside the bar of the Grey River .. Not more than 10 miles from the signal flag-staff (tugs and dredgers not carrying passengers) Nil.
Havelock .. .. Inside a right line drawn from West Entry Pt. to the northernmost point of Forsyth Island; and inside a right line drawn across the channel (at its narrowest width) separating Forsyth Island from the mainland Inside, and 2 miles seaward, of a right line drawn from Cape Koamaru and Halfway Pt. via Walker Rock, northern end of Nukuaiata and southern end of Trio Island and inside a line drawn from Cape Soucis to Sauvage Pt. Nil.
Herekino .. .. Inside the bar of the Herekino River .. Nil .. .. .. .. Nil.
