It is not the intention of the Tribunal to exercise its powers of prohibition of sale of such goods (except in the event of special circumstances) for four weeks from the date of publication of the above notice in the Gazette. All persons concerned are hereby notified, however, that after the expiration of four weeks from the date of publication of the above notice (or earlier in the event of special circumstances) it is the intention of the Tribunal, in accordance with the powers conferred on it by the provisions of section 40 of the Control of Prices Act, 1947, to prohibit the sale of any such goods otherwise than at prices approved by it.
Wheat, Oats, and Barley.—Estimated Yields
Census and Statistics Department,
Wellington, 10th February, 1949.
The following estimated average yields per acre of wheat, oats, and barley for the season 1948–49 have been compiled from reports furnished by officers of the Department of Agriculture throughout New Zealand, and are now published for general information:—
| District. | Wheat. Bushels per Acre. | Oats. Bushels per Acre. | Barley. Bushels per Acre. |
|---|---|---|---|
| North Island .. | 40 | 38 | 39 |
| Marlborough .. | 32 | 26 | 38 |
| Nelson | 33 | 32 | 36 |
| Canterbury .. | 35 | 38 | 37 |
| Otago .. | 40 | 45 | 34 |
| Southland .. | 45 | 60 | 31 |
| Average (estimated) for New Zealand .. | 37 | 45 | 37 |
The above estimates may be compared with last season’s actual average yields, which were: Wheat, 36·68 bushels; oats, 45·18 bushels; and barley, 32·93 bushels.
In accordance with the above estimates, the total yield of wheat for the season 1948–49 should be approximately 5,500,000 bushels, as against an ascertained yield of 4,539,017 bushels for the season 1947–48.
The area from which oats were threshed for the four seasons ending with 1947–48 averaged 33 per cent. of the total area under that crop. Assuming that a similar proportion is threshed this year, the total yield of grain would be approximately 2,800,000 bushels, as against a yield of 2,853,517 bushels for the season 1947–48.
On a similar assumption in regard to barley, the total yield of grain would be approximately 2,000,000 bushels, as against 2,087,900 bushels for the season 1947–48.
