Light Established

Previous notices: Nos. 27 and 30 of 1948.
Position: Southern extreme Motuara Island, Lat. 41° 06′·2 S.; long. 174° 17′·6 E. (approx.) Chart No. 2685.
Abridged description: Gp. Fl. (2) 10 sec. 75 ft. 14 M (U).
Details: An unwatched white light (electric) showing 2 flashes every 10 seconds thus: Flash 0·4 secs. eclipse 1·6 secs., flash 0·4 secs. eclipse 7·6 secs. will be exhibited on or about 20th October from a white steel tubular tower in the above position.
Elevation 75 ft., height of tower 15 ft., are uninterrupted.

Notice to Mariners No. 46 of 1949

PUBLICATION OF THE NEW ZEALAND NAUTICAL ALMANAC AND TIDE-TABLES FOR THE YEAR 1950

THE New Zealand Nautical Almanac and Tide-tables for 1950, compiled at the Nautical Adviser’s Office, Marine Department, will be published at Wellington about the 1st November, 1949, and afterwards may be purchased from Government Shipping Offices or the Marine Department, Wellington.

The publication contains the following information:—

Astronomical ephemeris of the sun; daily times of sunrise and sunset at Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Wellington, with time differences for ascertaining similar times at Invercargill, Nelson, New Plymouth, and Westport; phases of the moon; mean places and meridian passage of stars and times of moonrise and moonset at Wellington.

Tidal predictions, giving the daily times and heights of high and low water for the ports of Auckland, Bluff, Dunedin, Lyttelton, New Plymouth, Wellington, and Westport.

Time differences, by which the approximate time of high and low water may be obtained at 104 places within New Zealand.

Tidal steam predictions, giving the approximate daily times of the flood and ebb streams making at French Pass and Tory Channel.

Magnetic declination (variation of the compass) at places throughout New Zealand for 1950, and places where abnormal variation has been experienced; list of latest dated Admiralty charts of the coast and harbours of the Dominion, &c.; list of New Zealand lighthouses, radio beacons, and fog-signals; distress signals and procedure; regulations preventing collisions at sea; New Zealand time-service for chronometer rating; standard times of the world; general harbour signals; table of coastal distances; list of customs ports; meteorology of the New Zealand region; Pacific Ocean date-line; list of licensed adjusters of compasses and coastal pilots; ports at which compulsory pilotage is in force; system of buoyage; closing of British ports; a list of signal letters of ships registered in the Dominion; small ship radio-telephony service; useful nautical tables with the necessary explanations; and principal articles of the calendar, holidays, &c.

Information and plans relative to ports in New Zealand; important notices to mariners issued by the Admiralty and information for general use to navigators and others.

Prospective purchasers, especially those desiring a number of copies, should make early application so as to receive a supply from the first issue, as some weeks may elapse between the first and subsequent issues.

The Nautical Almanac is published by direction of the Hon. the Minister of Marine. Price 5s.

Non-existence of Beacons and Buoys

Position: Lat., 21° 07′ S.; long., 175° 12′ W. (approx.).
(1) In approximate position lat. 21° 00′ S., long. 175° 12′·5 W., Hakau Mamao Beacon destroyed and should be expunged.
(2) In approximate position lat. 21° 03′·5 S., long. 175° 18′ W., Toke Toke Beacon temporarily missing.
(3) In position lat 21° 06′ 33″ S., long. 175° 09′ 56″ W.—
(a) Alert Shoal Buoy is removed and should be expunged.
(b) Eight cables 059½° from (a) above, buoy is removed and should be expunged.

Non-existence of Flagstaff, Lights Extinguished, Existence of Beacon

Position: Lat., 19° 48′ S.; long. 174° 18′ W. (approx.).
(1) The following lights are extinguished:—
Haano Island Light, approximate position lat. 19° 38′·8 S., long. 174° 18′·1 W.
Muikuku Light, approximate position lat. 19° 46′·3 S., long. 174° 21′·7 W.
Hakau Loa Light, approximate position lat. 19° 48′·5 S., long. 174° 22′·4 W.
(2) Position Tongan Flagstaff—Lat. 19° 48′ 17″ S., long. 174° 21′ 18″ W.—
(a) 2·54 miles 310½° from position a beacon (position approximate) exists on Hakau Tuaniu.
(b) About 2½ cables northward of position, German Flagstaff no longer exists and should be expunged.
(c) About 1½ cables northward of position Pangai Light is extinguished.

Non-existence of Beacon.—Position of W/T Station, Buildings, and Place Names

Position: Lat., 16° 24′·8 S.; long., 179° 24′·7 E. (approx.).
(1) Position lat. 20° 19′·5 S., long. 179° 19′·1 E. (approx.). Mali Passage Beacon is missing.
(2) Position Hill (204), lat. 16° 24′·8 S., long. 179° 24′·7 E. (approx.)—
(a) Sugar Mill is 7·5 cables 221° from position.
(b) W/T Station is 11·0 cables 160½° from position.
(c) Post-office is 1·4 miles 247° from position.
(3) (a) Village approximately 2·5 miles 250° from position at (2) above should have name “Lambasa” deleted and name “Nasekula” substituted.
(b) Name “Nasea” should be inserted near Post-office at 2 (c).
(c) Name “Government Station” should be inserted near W/T Station at 2 (b).
(d) Name “Lambasa” should be inserted on lat. 16° 25′·4 S. between longitudes 179° 23′ E. and 179° 25′ E.

Sale of Unclaimed Property

IT is hereby notified that unclaimed property in the hands of the Police at the various police-stations will, if not claimed before Saturday, the 29th October, 1949, be sold thereafter by public auction.
