Wheat, Oats, and Barley.—Estimated Yields

Census and Statistics Department,
Wellington, 12th February, 1948.

THE following estimated average yields per acre of wheat, oats, and barley for the season 1947–48 have been compiled from reports furnished by officers of the Department of Agriculture throughout the Dominion, and are now published for general information:—

District. Wheat. Oats. Barley.
Bushels per Bushels per Bushels per
Acre. Acre. Acre.
North Island .. 36 36 44
Marlborough .. 32 27 42
Nelson .. 30 31 31
Canterbury .. 35 38 36
Otago .. 41 50 40
Southland .. 60 70 45
Average (estimated) for — — —
the Dominion .. 37 47 38

The above estimates may be compared with last season’s actual average yields, which were: Wheat, 37·96 bushels; oats, 48·58 bushels; and barley, 38·21 bushels.

In accordance with the above estimates, the total yield of wheat for the season 1947–48 should be approximately 4,500,000 bushels, as against an ascertained yield of 5,368,120 bushels for the season 1946–47.

The area from which oats were threshed for the three seasons ending with 1946–47 averaged 32 per cent. of the total area under that crop. Assuming that a similar proportion is threshed this year, the total yield of grain would be approximately 2,600,000 bushels, as against a yield of 2,686,211 bushels for the season 1946–47.

On a similar assumption in regard to barley, the total yield of grain would be approximately 2,500,000 bushels, as against 2,026,786 bushels for the season 1946–47.

G. E. WOOD, Government Statistician.
