Notice to Mariners No. 54 of 1948

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 29th November, 1948.

CHANGE IN WEATHER REPORTING CODES
Details: Effective from 0001 hours G.M.T., 1st January, 1949, the code used in collective broadcasts of land station and ship synoptic weather reports are to be changed to the new International Code (Washington 1947). This change is universal and will apply to weather broadcasts in code from meteorological services throughout the world.

Consequent upon this code change, all details regarding code forms and tables, together with station index numbers given in the publication “Shipping Meteorological Organization in the Areas adjacent to New Zealand” (N.Z.A.P. 55) should be cancelled.

A new publication to replace N.Z.A.P. 55 will be issued early in 1949, but in the interim period from 1st January, 1949, until this new publication becomes available, details of code forms, tables, and station index numbers relating to the new code can be found in a publication “Supplementary Ships Weather Reporting Scheme” N.Z.M.S. 103, which will be available shortly.

This publication will be issued to all ships appearing on the N.Z. Selected Weather Reporting Ship List, and will also be available after 15th December, at the Meteorological Offices at Auckland, Gisborne, New Plymouth, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Invercargill for any other Mariners requiring copies.

Weather Reports from Ships at Sea
The Director, New Zealand Meteorological Service, asks that unless otherwise instructed, Masters continue making and transmitting weather reports when at sea after 1st January, 1949, in the same code as previously used. Every endeavour will be made, however, by the N.Z. Meteorological Service to visit at an early date all ships making weather reports, in order that instructions on the new code can be given.

Publications Affected: N.Z.A.P. 55, New Zealand Nautical Almanac and Tide Tables, 1948 and 1949 Editions, page 125.
Authority: Director, Meteorological Services.
