Proclaiming Tribal Districts under the Maori Social and Economic
Advancement Act, 1945

A PROCLAMATION
Pursuant to section six of the Maori Social and Economic
Advancement Act, 1945, I, Lieutenant-General Sir Bernard
Cyril Freyberg, the Governor-General of the Dominion of New
Zealand, do hereby declare the parts of New Zealand described in
the Schedule hereto to be tribal districts for the purposes of the said
Act, and do hereby assign to each of the several districts the name
appearing at the head of the description of each such district.
SCHEDULE
THE WESTERN KAIKOHE TRIBAL DISTRICT
All that portion of the Hokianga and Bay of Islands Counties,
bounded by a line commencing at Trig. Station C, Putahi, in
Block XI, Omapere Survey District; thence north-easterly along
a right line to the junction of the Waikaramu and Old Bay Roads
with the Kaitaia-Whangarei Road in Block IX, Kawakawa Survey
District; thence south-easterly along a right line to Trig. Station K
in Block IX aforesaid; thence south-westerly along a right line to
the northernmost corner of Motatau No. 3s Block, and a right line
to the westernmost corner of Section 13, Block IV, Punakitere
Survey District; thence south-easterly along a right line to the
westernmost corner of Motatau No. 1B No. 5B No. 3 Block, in
Block VI, Motatau Survey District; thence south-westerly along
a right line to Trig. Station XXVI, Ngatitara, in Block XII,
Punakitere Survey District; thence south-easterly along a right
line, passing through Trig. Station XXVIA, to the northern boundary
of the middle portion of Nukutawhiti Block, being the boundary
of the Bay of Islands County; thence westerly and northerly
generally along that county boundary, being part of the said
northern boundary of the middle portion of Nukutawhiti Block
and its production westwards to the middle of the Awarua River,
down the middle of that river and up the middle of the Mangakahia
River to a point in line with the production south-eastwards of the
north-eastern boundary of Aukumeroa No. 2 Block; to and along
that boundary and its production north-westwards to the middle
of the Mangakahia River, up the middle of that river and a small
stream forming part of the north-eastern boundary of Section 3,
Block XV, Punakitere Survey District, to a point in line with the
northern boundary of Section 3 aforesaid, along that boundary
and part of the western boundary of that section, across a public
road, and along the other part of the western boundary and its
production to the middle of the Mangakahia River, and up the
middle of that river to a point in line with the eastern boundary
of Section 13, Block XIII, Punakitere Survey District, to and
along that boundary and part of the eastern boundary of Section 14,
Block XIII aforesaid, to the north-eastern corner of that section,
across a public road to the nearest road angle, along the western
boundaries of Sections 6 and 4, Block XIII aforesaid, along part
of the southern, south-eastern, and north-eastern boundaries of
Kohatutaka Block, the eastern boundaries of Section 2, Block VI,
and Section 2, Block II, Punakitere Survey District, and the
production of the last-mentioned boundary to the middle of the
Punakitere River, down the middle of that river and up the middle
of the Mangatoa Stream, to and along the eastern boundary of

Block I, Punakitere Survey District, and the production of that
boundary, across Blocks XIII and XIV, Omapere Survey District,
to a point due east of Trig. Station A¹, Pukewharariki; thence
due west along a right line to that trig. station; thence northerly
along a right line towards Trig. Station B, in Block II, Omapere
Survey District, to its intersection with the northern boundary
of Section 5, Block X, Omapere Survey District; thence north-
easterly along a right line to Trig. Station LA in Block X aforesaid;
thence due east along a right line to the shores of Omapere Lake,
and easterly generally along the northern shores of that lake to
a point on a right line between Trig. Station H, in Block IV,
Omapere Survey District, and Trig. Station C, Putahi, in Block XI,
Omapere Survey District; thence south-westerly along that line,
crossing portion of Omapere Lake, to the said Trig. Station C,
the point of commencement.
THE EASTERN KAIKOHE TRIBAL DISTRICT
All that portion of the Hokianga and Bay of Islands Counties,
bounded by a line commencing at the confluence of the Mangapapa
Stream and the Waipapa River, in Block XIII, Kaeo Survey
District, and being a point on the boundary of the Bay of Islands
County; thence north-easterly along that county boundary to the
sea-coast, being the middle of the Waipapa River and the Pukatea
Stream to the western boundary of Section 9, Block XIV, Kaeo
Survey District, the southern boundary of State forest (Gazette,
1933, page 3403), to Trig. Station 1, Mangingangina, the southern
boundaries of Mangingangina or Motukauri Block, the southern
and south-eastern boundaries of Section 4, Block XV, Kaeo Survey
District, the south-western and eastern boundaries of Section 35,
Block XII, Kaeo Survey District, the generally western side of the
road forming the eastern boundaries of Sections 35 and 3 of the
said Block XII, Section 4, Block XI, and Section 31, Block XII
aforesaid, a right line, being the production of the northern end
of the western side of the said road, across another public road,
the southern and eastern boundaries of Section 30, Block XII
aforesaid, the southern and eastern boundaries of Section 32,
Block XII aforesaid, the southern boundaries of Old Land Claim 25,
the southern and eastern boundaries of Section 3, Block VIII,
Kaeo Survey District, the south-eastern boundaries of Old Land
Claim 19, and the right bank of the Takou River to the sea-coast;
thence easterly and southerly generally along the sea-coast, and
including Moturoa and other adjacent islands, to the north-eastern
corner of Block IV, Kawakawa Survey District; thence south-
easterly along a right line to the Opua Wharf; thence south-
westerly along the south-eastern side of the Opua-Whangarei
Railway Reserve to the middle of the bridge at the mouth of the
Whangae River; thence westerly along a right line to the junction
of the Whangae Road with the Oromahoe-Opua Road, in Block VIII,
Kawakawa Survey District; thence south-westerly along a right
line to Trig. Station Y, in Block XI, Kawakawa Survey District;
thence westerly along a right line to Trig. Station K, in Block IX,
Kawakawa Survey District, being a point on the boundary of the
Western Kaikohe Tribal District hereinbefore described; thence
westerly generally along that boundary, to the intersection of a
right line from Trig. Station A¹, Pukewharariki, to Trig. Station B,
in Block II, Omapere Survey District, with the northern boundary
of Section 5, Block X, Omapere Survey District; thence north-
easterly along that line to Trig. Station B aforesaid; thence north-
westerly along a right line to the confluence of the Mangapapa
Stream with the Waipapa River, the point of commencement.
