Appointments in the Public Service

Office of the Public Service Commissioner,

THE Public Service Commissioner has made the following appointments in the Public Service :—

George Oliver Whatnall

to be an Inspector for the purposes of the Factories Act, 1921–22, on and from the 1st day of December, 1945.

Alfred Walter Knapp

to be Chief Clerk and Receiver of Land Revenue for the South Auckland Land District for the purposes of the Land Act, 1924, on and from the 15th day of November, 1945.

Alexander Shaw

to be District Registrar of Apprentices at Masterton for the purposes of the Apprentices Act, 1923, on and from the 12th day of October, 1945.

James Jeremiah O’Sullivan

to be Registrar of Marriages and of Births and Deaths for the District of Eketahuna, on and from the 15th day of November, 1945.

Robert Desmond Inglis Malcolm

to be Deputy Registrar of Births and Deaths of Maoris at Levin, on and from the 21st day of November, 1945.

Date of Election by Fire-insurance Companies to fill Extraordinary Vacancy on the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board

Wellington, 11th December, 1945.

PURSUANT to the Fire Brigades Act, 1926, and the rules made thereunder, the Minister charged with the administration of the said Act doth hereby appoint Thursday, the 3rd day of January, 1946, to be the date for holding the election of one member of the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board by the fire-insurance companies concerned, such election being held to fill the extraordinary vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr. H. Duncan.

The Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22, and its Amendments.—Prohibiting the Sale within the Borough of Carterton of certain Goods comprised in the Trade of a Tobacconist

WHEREAS a petition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the tobacconists’ shops within the Borough of Carterton, has been forwarded to the Minister of Labour desiring that the sale of certain goods comprised in the trade of a tobacconist—namely, smoking requisites—be prohibited during such time as the said shops are required to be closed in pursuance of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22 :

And whereas he is satisfied that the sale of the said goods is comprised in the said trade within the said borough, and that the signatures to such petition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the said shops within the said borough :

Now, therefore, in pursuance of section 33 of the said Act, the Minister of Labour doth hereby direct that on and after the 24th day of December, 1945, the sale of the said goods within the said borough shall be and is hereby prohibited as follows : On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays after the hour of 5.30 p.m., and on Fridays after the hour of 9 p.m., with the following exceptions : (1) On the evening of the working-day that first precedes any of the special days (other than Christmas Day and New Year’s Day) mentioned in or coming within the meaning of section 26 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22, the sale of the said goods is prohibited after the hour of 9 p.m. ; and (2) on the evening of the working-day that first precedes Christmas Day and on the evening of the working-day that first precedes New Year’s Day the sale of the said goods is prohibited after the hour of 10 p.m.

The notice gazetted on the 25th July, 1935, prohibiting the sale in the Borough of Carterton of certain goods comprised in the trade of a tobacconist, shall be and is hereby cancelled as from the date of the coming into operation of this notice.

The Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22, and its Amendments.—Fixing the Closing-hours of Tobacconists’ Shops within the Borough of Carterton

WHEREAS a requisition in writing has been forwarded to the Minister of Labour from the occupiers of tobacconists’ shops within the Borough of Carterton, pursuant to section 32 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22 :

And whereas he is satisfied that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the said shops within the said borough :

Now, therefore, in pursuance of the said section 32, the Minister of Labour doth hereby direct that on and after the 24th day of December, 1945, all the said shops within the said borough shall be closed in the evening of working-days as follows : Subject to closing not later than 1 p.m. on the day observed as the statutory closing-day, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 5.30 p.m., and on Fridays at 9 p.m., with the following exceptions : (1) On the evening of the working-day that first precedes any of the special days (other than Christmas Day and New Year’s Day) mentioned in or coming within the meaning of section 26 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22, the closing-hour shall be 9 p.m. ; and (2) on the evening of the working-day that first precedes Christmas Day and on the evening of the working-day that first precedes New Year’s Day, the closing-hour shall be 10 p.m.

The notice gazetted on the 14th July, 1921, fixing the closing-hours of (1) hairdressers’ and (2) tobacconists’ shops in the Borough of Carterton shall be and is hereby cancelled in so far as it relates to the shops affected by this notice as from the date of the coming into operation of this notice.

The Servicemen’s Settlement and Land Sales Act, 1943.—Notice declaring Land taken for the Settlement of Discharged Servicemen

WHEREAS an application has been made for the consent of the Land Sales Court to a transaction which relates to the land described in the Schedule hereto and to which Part III of the Servicemen’s Settlement and Land Sales Act, 1943, applies :

And whereas the Land Sales Committee to which the application has been referred is of opinion that the land to which the application relates is farm land suitable for the settlement of discharged servicemen :

And whereas the said committee, not being satisfied that the Crown had decided not to acquire or arrange for the acquisition of the land, did on the 13th day of November, 1945, make an order determining the basic value of the land and no appeal from the said order was made within the time prescribed by the said Act or within any further time allowed by the Court :

And whereas the said land is not the land of any serviceman who is for the time being serving outside New Zealand in any of His Majesty’s Forces or in any British ship :

Now, therefore, the Minister of Lands, acting in pursuance of section 51 of the said Act, doth hereby declare that the said land is taken for the settlement of discharged servicemen, and hereby specifies the 21st day of December, 1945, as the date on which the said land shall be deemed to be vested in His Majesty the King.

SCHEDULE

CANTERBURY LAND DISTRICT

ALL that parcel of land containing three hundred and thirty-two (332) acres and three (3) perches, more or less, being Lots 10 and 20 and part Lot 9, Deposited Plan 3654, being part Rural Section 26793, situated in Block IV, Spaxton Survey District, and Block XI, Hutt Survey District, and being all the land comprised in certificate of title, Vol. 335, folio 19 (Canterbury Registry).
