Honours and Awards approved by His Majesty the King
Office of the Minister of Defence,
Wellington, 29th March, 1945.
H IS Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to approve the following immediate awards to members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, in recognition of gallantry and devotion to duty in air operations against the enemy :—
Distinguished Flying Cross
Flying Officer Phillip John Reid (NZ 415421), of Hastings.
By his courage in the face of the enemy, skilled airmanship, and devotion to duty, this officer brought his aircraft safely to base after it had been holed in over 170 places during an attack on a heavily defended enemy position on New Ireland on 12th December, 1944. With a member of his crew severely wounded, the control cables to one rudder severed, petrol tanks holed, the tail wheel punctured, and the throttle control of one engine so damaged that the throttle could be closed but not opened, Pilot Officer Reid displayed exceptional skill and coolness. On testing the damaged throttle and finding it impossible to increase power again, he nursed his bomber home with one engine giving much more power than the other, maintaining control in spite of the extensive damage. After an hour’s exceptionally difficult flying he landed at base. This officer has flown 116 operational missions in ten months' flying, completing two tours of duty in less than a year, and throughout has shown consistently fine devotion to duty.
