His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to approve the following immediate award, in recognition of gallantry and devotion to duty in air operations against the enemy:—

Distinguished Flying Cross

NZ 411832 Warrant Officer (now Pilot Officer) William James Porter, Royal New Zealand Air Force, of Pukekohe.

Partly overcome by fumes when petrol flooded the fuselage of his aircraft during an operational patrol in the Bismarck area on 28th October, 1944, this pilot gave a sterling demonstration of devotion to duty by remaining at the controls and making a safe landing in the most difficult circumstances. A breakdown in the fuel jettison system resulted in fumes filling the aircraft, and stupefying the crew and causing partial asphyxiation. One member was fatally poisoned, and the others
